Discouraging Attempts at Smoking this Flake

St. James Woods is a mainstay in my stash, but it can he finicky. I often dry it in flake form for a couple of hours, then give it a quick rub and back to drying for a couple more hours. Repeat until fully rubbed and on the verge of too dry, and it works like a charm...at least for me. I usually...

    I am a proud father!

Congratulations to you and your wife Sherlock! You've made a beautiful baby, and I'm not just saying that to be polite. This calls for a dip into the depths of the humidor!

    Popeye "The Sailor Man"

My grandfather was in the same frat as Bing, and was good friends with Bob. I asked him one evening, as we watched Bing melt a young starlettes heart on the tube, if they were that slick in person. My grandfathers reply? Smoother...

    New York CIty

Which is why I won't see Disneyland when I head down to California next month...well, perhaps from the Interstate.

    Popeye "The Sailor Man"

Given that Popeye was born of the Great Depression, I would venture to guess that he smoked the ubiquitous plug found under glass in many of the druggists of the day. From speaking to people of my grandfathers generation, it was the go-to smoke for many a working man...harsh, laden with...

    Local purchase vs online cost

I echo the Nova Scotian; with the exception of tobacco prices. Tins run me between $35 and $50 each (50g), so the ninety you allocated might cover the Blackhouse. A buck thirty-four nine per litre in Vancouver, BC...or at least my little part thereof.

    85 years do I dare

I was lucky enough to receive a sample of this from Pawpaw as part of my “Secret Santa” gift package, and he asked that I write a review of the blend. This review is based on three healthy sized bowls, smoked in clay (also, thanks to Pawpaw!), Meer, and briar. Inspection of the blend reveals a...

    2012 PAD Charts...

A new clay, which has been ordered, and hopefully a commission in the summer to commemorate the birth of my second child are my only planned purchases this year - of course, I didn't plan on buying the majority of last years purchasies...funny how it just kind of happens. The cellar, on the...

Balkan Sovereignty - I think this is Funny, but Not Sure

What I find most humourous is how this fellow goes on about this re-release being THE Balkan Sobranie Original Blend, which shows the true innocence. Certainly, the blenders at Germain followed the blending notes from the House of Sobranie to a T. Unfortunately, due to the constituent...

OK We Have English and American English Blends

I would say Cavendish...like the town in the Maritimes. Molson XXX is brutal, brings back bad Frat related memories...or rather half-memories.

    Bob's chocolate flake alternative?

If you can find it, Samuel Gawith Chocolate Flake might fit the bill.

    Who Finger Tamps ?

Guilty. I have to consciously remind myself to reach for a tamper when handling original client documents, or prior to going into meetings, bit my charred fingernail belies my practice even then.

    What's your highest nicotine tobacco??

I'm a nicotine fiend, have a few blends in rotation that can catch one unawares. I would have to say 1792 takes the cake though, with perhaps Peterson Irish Flake running second. Ten Russians runs the strongest of any "English" type blends.

    Amphora

Amphora is still a widespread OTC in Canada - I smoke brown (original blend) on occasion. The pouches don't denote who the importer is, but I suspect either the Scandinavian Tobacco Group Canada (responsible for most Canadian OTC's, including Capt. black and Sail) or Imperial Tobacco...although...

    Nonsmoker Sniffing My Smoke

I can't decide if that is cool or just disconcerting...I have this picture in my head of you opening the living-room curtains one morning, and this guy is standing there, inhaling deeply...perhaps I shouldn't have watched that Criminal Minds marathon before bed last night. Damn; I'm on the...

    Telling Stems Apart?

Aye, the Occular bits favoured pre-WWI and by some contemporary makers throw this off. My preferred method is to take a dental pick, make a thin scratch where button meets stem, which I then wet down. If this scratch oxidizes, I know I'm dealing with vulcanized rubber products, if it doesn't...

Any Canucks willing to give Molto Dolce a new home?

If your looking to order some, you can find it (and the other Altadis / Sutliff Private Stock blends) here (direct link to Molto Dolce here). As long as you keep your order small (less than 200g / $20), you shouldn't have to pay through the teeth at customs, too. It's a real PITA for blenders to...

What Do You Do After TAD?

I currently have 27 jars on the go...I think I need to get to smoking my "regulars" more...well...regularly. These days, when I get a new tin, I usually end up smoking it down before I move on, but thats more to meet deadlines for reviews than by design.
