    Commercial Blends...Consistent Over the Years?

I have recently started smoking my briars again. Like everyone else, I decided to try different tobacco blends, and I have found two, commercially prepared blends, that I enjoy smoking, when mixed together. I have mixed Lane Ltd. "HGL" Mild English) with McClellan's-#2050 (Oriental Cavendish)...

Need Help With a Possible New Pipe Smoker

Try filling a delicate, Churchwarden with some light aros, (that were mentioned above), or rub out a Swisher Sweet Blunt and fill the pipe with that tobacco. Sipping on a Churchwarden, and getting a cool, sweet, and mild smoke, might just get you a new pipe companion. Then you can both, smoke...

    Old Dublin, Half&Half, ghosting.

mso489- You just answered and made a reference to residual "ghosting" when using Lakeland Aromatic blends. I just returned to pipe smoking after a long hiatus, and would like to know just why Lakeland aros are so notorious regarding leaving behind residual flavors/aromas that will "haunt"...

    Deciphering James Upshall/Tilshead Shank Markings

Thanks for the interest, and education regarding my Tilshead pipe. Also thanks for providing the interesting links. Really appreciate learning some the answers to my queries. Finally, after 30 years, I know about the pipe I own. This subject: my Tilshead pipe, came to be owned by me in a very...

    Deciphering James Upshall/Tilshead Shank Markings

Close to 30 years ago, I acquired a pipe made at the James Upshall pipe works. The pipe is a straight/saddle stemmed pot, with a 2" diameter bowl X 1/3/4" high...OAL about 6-3/8" Wall thickness at the widest diameter about 1/2" tapering internally towards the top rim which is 3/8" thick at the...

What Is So Hard About Keeping Pipe Sweetener in Stock?

Dave.... Just read thru your second posting re: detection of residuals, etc. Forget the Rum Extract. It might leave behind something that you dislike. Just get some cheapo, high-proof, straight Vodka, or straight grain alcohol. this works just as well as any expensive "sweetener".

What Is So Hard About Keeping Pipe Sweetener in Stock?

David.... Go to any large supermarket. Go down the aisle where they sell spices, and flavorings for baking cookies and cakes. Look for a small bottle of cheap, MC CORMICK RUM EXTRACT, and buy it. When you get home, dip the tip end of a scrubby pipe cleaner into this stuff, and scrub out the...

    Taste Issues After Smoking

Not familiar with the strength of those blends that you are smoking, but I know what you mean. I always, right after smoking, as my pipe is still cooling off, brush me teeth and tongue. Gets most of that tobacco flavor out of my mouth. I like smoking, but hate the after taste. I bring along a...

Tips About Pipe Tobacco Shops in NYC

Sadly, most of the old, traditional, Tobacconists, and shops specializing in selling pipes and accessories are gone. You can find anything you want in NYC, except a good Tobacconist-Pipe shop. Mentioned above are three stores that specialize in selling cigars. I doubt these stores make any...

    Uneven Rim Height

My first thoughts.....if the uneven rim will always annoy you, fix it, and enjoy the pipe. More thoughts.... Are you a collector? Will you eventually sell off the pipe for an expected profit? It's a worshiped, Dunhill after all....some guys like them. Will you care if you destroy the value...

    Tung Oil, Yes or No

BTW, as I mentioned.....Walnut Oil can be found in any well stocked health food store, large stores with a "Gourmet" section, possibly, Trader Joe's, etc. It is used primarily to dress greens and salads. It's always sitting next to other specialty oils, e.g.....Avocado, Olive, Grape Seed, Flax...

    Tung Oil, Yes or No

Try: Walnut Oil, or Coconut oil...both edible/food-grade quality....both smell great, and both can be easily found in any good health/food stores, and markets. Use the Walnut Oil for dressing up a fancy goat cheese and arugula salads. A small bottle will last a lifetime when used for just...

    The Stepchild of Italian Pipes

Mr. Banjo.... Interesting facts. Can you explain what "Oil Curing" means in relation to briar pipes. Are the briar blocks boiled in oil, instead of water, to remove the bitter, sappy, resins? Does this oil treatment stabilize the briar and reduce checking/cracking? Are briar pipes "cured"...

    Wood Fired Clay Pipes...

Wish your photos were posted successfully, would have liked to see your pipe-ish efforts at making clay pipes. The following is just guesswork on my part... but just a few thoughts: You didn't mention the type of clay body that was used to make your pipes. It matters. High fire clays like...

Pipe Design and Briar Block Selection Specs.

Just a quick update: Contacted Steve Norse @ Vermont Freehand and he'll pick out some briar blocks to accommodate my specified dimensions. How could I ask for better service? BTW, I wish some big pipe shows would once again be held in NYC or Newark....now that my interests in pipes, tobaccos...

All My Navy Duty Stations Are Defunct

Why I clicked onto this thread, I have no idea, but I'm glad that I did. I never was in the service, but often imagine how my life would have changed if I enlisted into the Navy, as I had planned to do when I graduated from high school back in 1968. I was too near sighted. Also too...

Pipe Design and Briar Block Selection Specs.

Dan, Thanks for the tips. The thought of buying some relatively expensive, briar blocks, sight unseen, really gets me nervous. But, I have no choice. I got to do it if I want to make some pipes. It took me not a few hours to sketch out my pipe designs, to work out the bowl's proportions...
