When Caminetto ceased operations the three main carvers went their respective ways, Ascorti and Radice went on to found pipe companies under their own name and Enzo Galluzo went on to found the Capitello Pipe Company.
Capitello was the first Italian pipe company to oil cure their briar. It's hard to believe this beautiful Capitello Gotico I'm keeping smokey with some 5 y/o Esoterica Tilbury was once a Vergin finish. It was the first pipe I ever purchased with that finished being told by someone with much more experience than I who told me it would color much like a Meerschaum does.
Although I was skeptical about what he'd told me nearly 30 years of keeping it smokey has proven him right because the pipe has never had Wax applied or been buffed but it is simply a beauty to behold in my eyes.
Unfortunately Capitello ran into financial difficulties and faded away which is too bad since their pipes were on par with Castello even passing their parent company Caminetto by a wide margin, if you can find one buy it you won't regret it.

Some of the best pipes are made by companies that have gone out of business. Bari and Luciano come to mind, but many others.

Mr. Banjo....
Interesting facts.
Can you explain what "Oil Curing" means in relation to briar pipes. Are the briar blocks boiled in oil, instead of water, to remove the bitter, sappy, resins? Does this oil treatment stabilize the briar and reduce checking/cracking? Are briar pipes "cured" before, or after, the pipe's bowl is fabricated?
Just curious.

banjo, after selling pipes for more than 21 years I still can't figure out why some brands get little attention. I have seen a number of Capitello's and they have been really well done. IMHO their "drip wax" finish is one of the nicest offered. Funny enough I've never smoked one. Each one that has ever crossed my path has been too large for me. Maybe some day I'll stumble across just the right one.

Frank, of the pipe makers that "oil cure" I believe that each has their own "secret" method and oil recipe. I do not know the exact techniques, but suspect some do indeed boil the blocks in oil, some whole, some pre drilled. Others may just wipe the chamber and heat etc.
I do not know if the technique prevents cracking. I suspect the loss ratio is high though. Once a block or pre drilled block is heated to "extract" the oil I would think that some stress hits the briar and there would be a number of casualties in the process.
Maybe contacting a carver such as Lee Von Erck ( Von Erck Pipes ) or Jimmy Craig ( Ashton Pipes ) might offer some insight.

Thanks to Michael J. Glukler of Briar Blues for his discourse on oil curing, while each Pipemaker has their own special way of tackling this I'm afraid however Enzo Galluzo of Capitello did is was lost when they closed their doors, nothing in my searches have me finding his working with any other pipe company so I doubt his methods were ever reproduced, a shame really and I'm so glad this Group 3 Capitello Gotico found me when it did, regards.
