Surviving On Five Brothers Pipe Tobacco!
Dark Birds Eye is no longer dark Birds Eye. But both the real thing and its replacement are quite different from 5 bros. They taste strongly of a certain type of hardwood smoke and sometimes have a whiff of that Lakeland flavor. Five bros is rougher, less complex, with a top note like ersatz cocoa- makhorkasmoker

Traveling With Pipes/Tobacco. Has it changed for you?
I agree with most of your points. I'd just like to add, when I am traveling, smoking a pipe gets me interacting more with the people of a place. I still take with me two or three knockabout pipes, cob or briar. And a ziplock bag filled with my usual air cured blend. A bic. Pipe cleaners. A Czech tool. All which is thrown in an old Tupperware container . So not much has changed for me- makhorkasmoker

What's your favorite Cigar Leaf Blend?
The only commercial cigar leaf blend I’ve tried that really liked was Billy Budd. The cigar is used with Latakia to strike a really interesting chord. I do sometimes blend Paraguay ligero leaf with other air cured tobaccos. I like it for a change of pace- makhorkasmoker

PAD Is Kicking In
I’ve had only good experiences with old German clays. I smoke them til they’re saturated with tar, put them in hot coals. They come out clean white, then I smoke them again. Can Cake Fix Moisture Problems?
I have found some wet smoking pipes will improve with use, but I do not think it’s the cake that does it. I’ve had cake at varying thickness in these pipes and it made little difference, but time and smoking did. Tongue Bite Smoking a Clay
I suspect that while you were struggling to get it and keep it lit you were drawing harder, and that contributed to tongue burn.
