The Leading Edge of a Massive Future Problem

the main problem is journalism is dying—especially print journalism. We now have vast “news deserts” across much of the US with few if any newspapers except “ghost” papers. Even in large cities the newsrooms are slashed or closed. TV news and its online outlets do not fill in the enormous void...

Tobacco Pouches: Better Than a Ziploc?

Kawasaki Vulcan 900. I rode it from Florida to telluride Colorado and back this summer, backroads all the way.

Tobacco Pouches: Better Than a Ziploc?

Thank you. I’ve been reading up on the silicone ziplocks, as well as other reusable ziplocks made out other materials—except Mylar as I don’t wanna be dealing with sharp metal edges multiple times a day . I’m not sure which are best—but I may just start with some silicone and go from there

Tobacco Pouches: Better Than a Ziploc?

thank you. I have been reading up on these after your post. Apparently these bags rely on a layer of activated carbon. The carbon can be reactivated by heating up the bag in the sun, a dryer, etc. How long it will continue to work, I don’t know, but it’s an interesting alternative I have not...

Tobacco Pouches: Better Than a Ziploc?

Love those merchant service silk pouches. Very tempted by one of those

Tobacco Pouches: Better Than a Ziploc?

I use quart-sized Ziploc freezer bags for tobacco pouches. There are good things and bad things to be said for this practice. The good things are many. A ziploc holds a lot of tobacco, enough to last me a week or more. If it's windy, I don't have to worry about tobacco blowing away (as a might...

What Are You Listening To? - August, 2025

That is awesome. I’ve listened to a few Chico Hamilton albums and loved them, but that one’s new to me. I’ll try to find it on Spotify tonight

What Are You Listening To? - August, 2025

I’ve been listening to a recently released album by the Forth Wanderers, an indie band I like: “The Longer This Goes On.”

Cheap Tobacco is Better Than It Should Be

If by “young” you mean minimally aged, I guess it’s possible, but I’ve had mine jarred for a year at least and so far as I can tell, it’s as bad as it ever was

Cheap Tobacco is Better Than It Should Be

Inspired by briar lee’s posts, I tried a couple of RYO “pipe tobaccos”. I tried smoking them off and on for a while, and I can’t stand them. Part of the problem is the toppings they use— to imitate the commercial cigarette taste. But the real problem is an underlying bitter nastiness. I don’t...

    smokingpipes.com bulk samples

Sometimes bulk tobaccos, especially from c&d, are a bit too “fresh” for my tastes. Some of their burley blends can taste pretty barnyardy and need a few weeks in the jar to settle down. I don’t judge a tobacco by moisture levels. That’s just case. It can be adjusted to your tastes. A dry...

    Nicotine Sensitivity as I Age

For me it’s not the nicotine but flavorings and additives that create headaches. Low nicotine blends with vanilla flavorings especially make me feel ill. If I do feel bad from too much nicotine, it’s a different kind of bad—not a headache

Buying and Blending Tobacco from LeafOnly

When the tobacco arrives, I open the bags, and sometimes take the leaves out of the bags , depending on how moist they are. I let them air out. When the leaves are dry, but not to the crumbly point, I put them back in the bags and close the bags. Then I check on them every now and then—after a...

    Chasing Oswald - Documentary

I recently read Norman Mailer’s “Oswald’s Tale.” It’s the best thing I’ve read by that author, and despite mailer’s reputation, he took a pretty down to earth approach to subject too, I thought.

Buying and Blending Tobacco from LeafOnly

I smoke pretty much exclusively whole leaf. I buy mine from Whole Leaf Tobacco. Although the price is nice, my main reason is that commercial blenders do not sell unadulterated Kentucky Burley or Dark Air Cured, which are the 2 tobaccos I smoke. The only drawbacks for me are that I have to cut...

    High Nicotine Pipe Tobacco Recommendations

I recommend Kentucky Burley and especially Dark Air Cured. I blend them together. So far as I know they’re only available in whole leaf. It’s very easy to grow and cure your own rustica. I did it for years. For me green cured is the most satisfying.

    Biggest cob bowl?

I was wondering how much went to ethanol and how much to animal feed. I know nothing about it

    Biggest cob bowl?

I just took a motorcycle ride through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and a few other states, sticking to backroads all the way. I was amazed at the amount of corn being grown. In the past I would see it rotated with soybeans and other crops. This time it was...
