Reading this one cause some of you praised it

    Chilli Powder Recipe Please?

I also use those dried peppers—guajillo, California, ancho (sparingly), arbol or cayenne (for heat), sometimes chipotle if I want the smoke/adobo flavor. Sometimes a Spanish pimenton, also smoky. There are others. I either use the toast and steeped method described above , or I grind the peppers...

    What are You Reading Now?

Yes, I think Simenon considered “the snow is dirty “ and a number of other novels as his “serious” work

    Bowl Size And Smoking Duration

I have noticed that small bowls seem to be slightly more efficient, in terms of how much tobacco is used. That said, my goal when smoking a pipe is not efficiency.

    Dark Fired Kentucky

For me it’s important to distinguish between a dark fired Kentucky , such as the c&d blender, and so many other smoke cured tobaccos that go by similar names —“old dark fired, Kendal Kentucky, Kendal dark, etc. The smoke flavors of the latter group are quite different from the former

    Are Tobacco Toppings Natural?

I’m looking at a packet of black licorice here in Spain, where I’m visiting family, and the ingredients label reads “licorice extract “—or extrato de regaliz. Must be a U.S.A. Thing

    Are Tobacco Toppings Natural?

After years of struggling to find commercial blends I liked, I eventually switched to smoking relatively “natural” c&d blenders. From there I went to whole leaf tobacco, which is pretty much the only thing I’m smoking now. But I’m an odd case (pun intended)

    Old Joe Krantz first impressions

I like old Joe krantz, but of c&d’s “power burleys”, Big n Burley is probably my fave

Re-reading this one the third time. Bedside book. One of my faves

    Clay Bird Thrower

I haven’t shot clay birds in decades. I remember we used a machine much like Mr Lee’s, but also long sticks with a bit of flex to them

    Are Expensive Cobs Better?

My fave mm pipes have always been their cheapest unplastered ones—the Eaton, the Missouri pride, and the unfinished Morgan. The one exception is the mini, which I don’t use except for fine strong shag cuts.

    Cough?

The main reason a pipe will make me cough is that the smoke helps clear my sinuses, resulting in occasional sinus drainage in the back of my throat.

Ghosting..Is it that Big of a Deal?

I love oriental ghosts. But some ghosts—like one left by conniston cut plug—are pretty awful

    Inhalation

My general approach to avoiding inhaling is to smoke blends so strong that it’s both unnecessary and unpleasant to do so

    Seeking Tobacco Suggestions

My approach was to try representative blends in as many genres and sub-genres as possible, as well as occasional oddballs that did not neatly fit in any category. Only then did I begin working more deeply into genres I liked best

    Combining Blends?

When I was exploring different blends and genres, and as a result buying lots of different tobaccos I did not care for, i tried the mystery blend method, just mixing up everything I did not care for, and the result was usually better, for me, than any of the individual blends that went into mix...

What Blends to Bring Home from USA?

I’d definitely bring some crooner. It has deer tongue—a native herb of the American South—and burley. While the blend itself may not be super old, it’s one of the few commercial remnants of a deep tradition

    Smokingpipes.com Advice

Of the bulks offered by them, I personally prefer burleys with a nice kick—so I go for mainly the c&d “power burleys”. If you’re into that sort of thing, I like big n burley, dark burley (out of stock lately), and old Joe krantz. If you like deer tongue, crooner is also good. Billy budd for me...

Well count yourself lucky! I miss the dark Birds Eye. It was my fave of the three
