So yeah I get tongue bite smoking in a clay, am I doing smth wrong? My briars do just fine unless I freight train or smoke really bright sharp VAs moist. Also get a very weird taste from them and my tobacco feels particularly hard to light in them. The pipe is a Bishop and Knight from Old German Clays.

I suspect that while you were struggling to get it and keep it lit you were drawing harder, and that contributed to tongue burn. And that pipe has a pretty small bowl, which can also make it easier to burn your tongue a bit while lighting up. At least that’s my experience.

Clays tend to have really narrow draft holes. And the stems… it requires some adjustment. If you like the pipe, I’d keep experimenting—drying the tobacco even more, packing lighter, drawing lighter, etc

As for flavor. The stems do have a slight flavor or something about the mouthfeel creates the illusion of a flavor. I find it fades with time and smoking.

Also, clays are used as tasting pipes for a reason. It’s possible you were picking up on notes you didn’t detect with briar

The walls are usually extremely thin, so that does not help at all. It is fairly more difficult to keep a cool smoke.

too tightly packed I'd guess.
