    Remove Varnish on New Pipes

This is my only beef with Rossi. I wish they just used carnauba instead of that crap varnish. Besides the finish, great pipes.

    Ruminations Regarding the Proper Cake

All of my pipes - briar, pearwood, maple, and corn cob - smoke just fine with no cake. I never have moisture problems unless I smoke outside on a cold, rainy day (in which case, I'll use a cob and the problem is solved). I never have an issue with any of my pipes (besides my clay) getting hot...

    In Defence of WAYS

It's like a virtual pipe club meetup. Well, I guess that's what the whole forum is, essentially, but you catch my drift. It's cool to see what pipes and blends others have been enjoying lately and the preferences of other forum members.

Villiger Tropical Export - It's a Weird One

Some pouch blends are good enough that they could be sold in a tin, and I bet they'd be wildly popular if tinned. +1 on the Amphora blends, particularly the Virginia and Kentucky. Sail Aromatic is also a great blend that comes in a pouch. The Missouri Meerschaum pouches I've tried are pretty...

    Blends by Setting

Morning: Afternoon: Night: I don't have a preference regarding time of day, but I usually smoke in the evenings. Rainy weather: Non-aromatic, heavier blends with or without latakia, DFK, perique. Rainy days are slow, contemplative days which deserve a slow, contemplative smoke. Sunny...

Villiger Tropical Export - It's a Weird One

You know, that doesn't sound half bad, honestly. I like nerding out about tobacco, but sometimes simple enjoyment is best. With most of my hobbies, I start out wanting to try anything and everything, but eventually just settle on a handful of reliable favorites to keep around. Villiger Tropical...

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

I've seen several posts now about making crumble cakes out of ribbon, and I'm definitely interested in giving it a try, if for no other reason than to make more room in my "cellar" by condensing some of the bulk blends I've amassed. It would be interesting to see how the flavor of a blend...

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

I have noticed that different bowl shapes and dimensions can work better for different cuts, yes. Wide bowls definitely make long, thick ribbon cut easier to load, and I like a narrower bowl for rubbed flakes (narrow and tall for folded flakes). Cross cuts work well in any bowl, which is part of...

***What Are You Smoking, December 2023?***

Fourth, and last, bowl of the day for me is C&D Haunted Bookshop in "Mr. Crowley," an El Morjane Algerian briar, paired with a glass of Ancient Age bourbon. Today was a pipe bender for me, a massive splurge on a day off. I did absolutely nothing today besides watch the rain, smoke pipes, drink...

    Dunhill pot question

A pot will typically have a wider, yet shallower bowl than a similarly sized billiard. I don't notice a flavor difference between shapes or that any particular pipe shape is suited to any tobacco type, but certain cuts of tobacco may be better suited to certain chamber dimensions. Example: you...

    Dark Fired Kentucky

DFK can really add some life to a Virginia. I'm not a huge perique fan, but I find that I like DFK and perique together, and VaPers that incorporate DFK are much more interesting to me than a straight VaPer. It's good in latakia blends, it's good with plain burley, and it's good on its own. It's...

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

I was thinking of one of the little manually operated ones, the type typically used for "herbs". Doing a quick search, I came across one that even fits over the mouth of a mason jar so one can grind directly into the jar. I see no reason not to give it a shot for tobacco. Just drop some broken...

Villiger Tropical Export - It's a Weird One

I've been giving some more heavily flavored aromatics a go lately, and Villiger Tropical Export was the one I chose to open this week. I purchased the pouch at SPC about eight months ago and promptly heat sealed the pouch in mylar to keep it fresh, as I always do. This one was thrown into my...

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

I've been smoking more aromatics lately in a larger pipe and gravity filling the chamber, as per a recommendation you made to me a while back, and I've been having more success with them, so thanks for that!

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

Though I usually like the finer cuts, I also find that I like ready rubbed blends, and sometimes I'll fold and stuff a well-aired flake. IMO, the thicker the cut, the drier it needs to be. The blends I most despise dealing with are overly moist aromatics that come as a sticky, thick ribbon. They...

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

You know, I hadn't thought of using a grinder, but that might actually be a good idea. Worth trying out, at least. Maybe I'll pick one up and run some Newminster 400 through it just to see what happens.

Modifying the Cut of a Blend

I've got a day off today and no obligations, so naturally, I've been sitting out on the deck, watching the trees and the rain, and indulging in several pipefuls. For months, I've been slowly working my way through a tin of C&D Da Vinci, a LatVaBur mixture of long ribbon blended with chunks and...

Who Else is Addicted to Algerian Briar?

I honestly have no idea whether or not the region/type of briar has any effect on the smoke, but all of my Algerian briars smoke incredibly well - cool, rich, flavorful smoke. I think I also just prefer the uncoated bowls.

***What Are You Smoking, December 2023?***

Practicing slowing down my smoking this evening with Villiger Tropical Export in an El Morjane Algerian briar large billiard. This is the biggest pipe on my rack, but I like the larger chamber for moist aromatics that smoke best with a gravity fill.
