I've been looking at these Peterson Meerschaums for awhile and, you guessed it, caved in to the desire to own one... From what I can tell, Cup O' Joes is the only place that are selling them... It's another Bulldog in Block Meerschaum with a colored finish, nickel band and fishtail bit...
Yes, you can wet sand with 600 grit to 12000 grit with good results, but it will take years to re-establish the patina that age has brought to this Pipe. Better to use white Beeswax.
Some blends will ghost any Pipe... A partial list would include: St Bruno, Clan, Condor, Grousemoor, most of the G&H blends and anything with Deer Tongue in it.
The use of a doubled over Pipe cleaner with Everclear on it, followed by reaming with a paper towel is a good idea. The ignition of any flammable liquid in a Meerschaum's chamber is not a good idea. Routine maintenance using this technique is a good idea. I also use a sharp blunt tipped knife...
Here's some more Petes...
This one is truly rare. Estate Peterson Dublin Sterling Facet African Block Meerschaum. Total length 61/2"; Bowl Height 2"; Bowl Width 1.25"; The silver band is 3/4" wide. Shape No. 312. This pipe is an “Aboriginal Yellow” it has a special sculpted finish and was...
There's not much available information on "calcination" of African Block Lonestar. This may be because of it being proprioratory...? Yes Robs, they are good Pipes & those of yours are looking like you've been smoking them for awhile... Nice patina going on the sitter.
I agree with Lawrence and I also suggest routine brushing. From what I've been reading lately, that frequent use of peroxide will pose a real hazard to gum health...
Thanks guys. These old African Block Peterson Meerschaums are getting harder to find since the Laxey mines shut down in '06. Eaglerico, this Pipe's color was applied at the factory, ergo the 'Tawney' designation. African Block typically is a mottled grey unlike the high grade Turkish Block...
This one caught my eye... I was immediately doomed, without a hope of passing on it. It is the best looking 304 Meerschaum I've encountered and will make a great addition to my growing collection of African Block Petersons... HEIGHT OF BOWL; 1 3/4"; DIAMETER OF PIPE BOWL: 3/4"; LENGTH: 5 3/8 "
Yes, it has turned out to be a great Pipe for Virginia blends. It really sings with Germain's Brown Flake. It's got a Peterson box and Pipe bag from spare parts at the local B&M to rest in and will see a lot of use around here.
Most of the time, the entire load gets smoked, as long as it's good. These Meerschaums are great for this as they absorb so much of the moisture of the smoke. If it's not so good, then it becomes dottle..., which winds up in the ash tray.
