A "ghost" is either a scent or a flavor (or sometimes both) that remains in a pipe after a certain tobacco has been smoked in it. For example, if you smoke a lot of an aromatic blend in a pipe, the "ghost" will be that it smells sweet and sugary (or whatever the aromatic smells like). If you smoke a Latakia blend in a pipe, the "ghost" will have a leathery/burnt leaf campfire smell and taste to it. A ghost is simply the essence of whatever type of tobacco was smoked in the pipe.

If you are worried about ghosting... dedicate your pipes.

Aromatics

English

Grousemoor
That'll solve any problems.
If you are truly worried about ghosting you will want to avoid Stanwell Melange... That will seriously ghost a pipe in a heart beat.

Some absolutely love Melange, but me... made my pipe taste like I was sucking on an orange peel. It took several bowls before the taste began to leave my pipes, and that was after I removed the cake and cleaned it between every bowl. I had only smoked about two puffs of that one bowl....

Not to speak for Lawrence but as one of the only other Grouse Moor smokers here that great blend is from Samuel Gawith. Difficult to explain its characteristics other than it is quite herbal. Not in a bad way at all but very distinct from other blends. Its an ancient recipe from a very high quality house. The SG line has become quite fabled over the past decade or so.

I'm sure that Lawrence can fill in the blanks.

Some blends will ghost any Pipe... A partial list would include: St Bruno, Clan, Condor, Grousemoor, most of the G&H blends and anything with Deer Tongue in it.

Papipeguy is right on the mark.

Here's a link to Samuel Gawith's 200 year old blend Grousemoor.

You might read my review, you'll see what I meant.
