    It's a Prince...!

Thanks guys...! This is another one where I got lucky..., almost made it under the radar but wound up with another bidder to make me shell out a few $$, but not bad at all. These African Block Petes have been going for huge prices lately and there have been a few that I might liked to have...

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

Here's an example of what many years of smoking and waxing can do with a Peterson African Block Meerschaum... Remember that they are all colored at the factory with pigment finish and the Pipe has to darken beyond that, as well as compensate for the calcination process.

    Cob pipes: The why's

The Missouri Meerschaum Cobs are good Pipes. For me, they excel with Burley blends, which the majority of drug store blends are made of. Cobs seem to thrive on neglect and will last for years. Inexpensive and readily available, they don't strain the budget and are a good smoke, once you break...

    First taste of OGS

The Orlik Golden Sliced in the 100 gram tins is an excellent smoke. Peter Heinrich's Golden Sliced is the same blend, but the taste is richer and more intense. Both are great smokes and very popular.

    Coloring a Mearshaum

Nice patina Dave..! How long did it take you to get this Pipe to color and what blends do you generally smoke in it? Are you using white Beeswax? Your concern for overheating the Vulcanite bit is understandable. When I use the hot wax application method, I remover all of the plastic fittings...

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

With waxing and continued smoking..., yes it will color. The display will eventually go to black. With the deep pigment finish and the years of surface grime that have migrated into the Block, the lighter displays of patina will not be easy to see. Once the absorbed oils of the smoke become...

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

Marmal4de writes, "Probably because they're all bents :/ Save the Baker St." More likely, the problem has been the availability of suitable raw materials for both Turkish high grade Block and African Block. Currently, the shortage of high grade Turkish Block is acute and Sellers of the current...

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

In response to my inquiries, this is what Eric @ Cupojoes had to say: "Peterson produced these in 2011 in limited quantities, on a special order basis. I don't know if they will make more of them or not, but they are not a standard production series. As far as I know, we are the only retailer...

    Stonehaven...thoughts

I've yet to be successful in getting this blend to perform for me. After trying different Pipes, different moisture contents, smoking it in the slice, cubed and rubbed out, all I can get is a rather mediocre taste and an elusive character of flavor. It's just not for me...

Strike your matches AWAY from you

A friend of mine has the habit of striking the match toward himself as well. One day, I asked him what he was burning, as the room note was acrid and pungent... He looked down to see a small fire had started in part of the hair on his chest and exclaimed, 'It's me that you're smelling!'

    Hearth and Home Magnum Opus

Word to the wise... 4 2oz tins comes to $34.20, while the 8oz tin costs $39.99... Go figure, but I don't think this will last a long time. As much as I'd like to see it in bulk, I don't think that will happen anytime soon. Currently, it is a wise time to buy at these prices. :puffy:

    Hearth and Home Magnum Opus

I really enjoy this blend... Just to make sure that things are good for the future, there's some in the cellar.

Thanks guys. It really is a passion and it is contageous... The Meerschaum Group is moving into it's 3rd year and currently has 337 members. Learning more about these Pipes increases both the enjoyment and appreciation for them. It really is fun.

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

Thanks guys, but I'm thinking that these Pipes have been out of production for awhile... The Peterson Isle of Man factory ceased operation about 1981 and the production of African Meers was moved to Dublin and continued there until 1986. The Isle of Man factory continued making African block...

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

Thanks guys. I've made inquiry to Angela Fortune; Kapp & Peterson Limited, for more information on the origin of this Pipe. I don't think that there are a lot of them around..., or at least none that I could find. I'll get back with whatever information I come across.

Oho then! Glad I asked that question. I didn't now that about the African Block. Thanks Fred. Olderthandirt You're welcome. There is another aspect of African Block Meerschaum that is unique. African Block can also be naturally black. It is rare & I've got one that is a Pioneer. I've...

Peterson Meerschaum Sherlock Holmes Squire Red Pipe #XL15R

Thanks guys. In answer to Olderthandirt's question..., not to me. All of my African Block Meerschaums have been colored with pigment at the factory. The unstained appearance of African Block is a mottled gray, that many find distracting. The pigment colored Meerschaums do eventually color...
