What's the Right Way to Pack a Pipe?

That'd give an interesting room note!

Anyone try BALKAN SOBRANIE PIPE TOBACCO yet?

I liked to try ANY version of the original, as well as the new incarnation of Balkan Sobranie. I don't think it is fair to expect the new blend to match the old since the tobaccos that they once used are most likely unavailable today... I'd just like to experience them for what they are rather...

Sir Walter Raleigh Regular - Pipe Tobacco Review

Perhaps I will try SWR. I found PA and H&H to be way too wet. I liked the general flavours of those two brands but the moisture/humectant did not appeal to me very much...

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

I never thought of FVF being that strong but it is good to know. Hopefully I'll be able to give you my take on it soon.

    Daughters and Ryan?

To the best of my knowledge, they were a roll your own company. That is probably why their prices are still low. I'm fairly certain they have branched into real pipe tobacco now and I believe their owner(?) is involved with the production of perique these days. Anyway, no, I haven't had any...

    Samuel Gawith - Skiff Mixture

Any Gawith is a good buy, for that matter. Even if it was selling slowly at first, somebody is bound to come in and clean them out sooner or later. If I was in more of an English or oriental mood I'd grab a tin, but I'm stuck on VAs for the most part.

What's the Right Way to Pack a Pipe?

Not to be a wiseacre but he sounds Irish to me. :puffy: That method would not suit me AT ALL. I'll take the ol' three step any day... I also prefer the cube cut and gravity fill for flakes.

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

Excellent summary, thanks. I look forward to the FVF - it sounds like a great after dinner smoke... I can enjoy Escudo and St. James comfortably on an empty stomach (even with caffeine) so I think I'm up for FVF. Best Brown Flake sounds like I could smoke it all day long. 1792 remains the only...

Excellent tip, thanks sixmp. Definitely don't want a huge cigar experience right off the bat!

    Typing

Typing has been second nature since I was in junior high but it is never too late to learn, Puffy. I'm sure there are still typing programs out there that you can get. I learned from "Typing Tutor" back in the day. I am fairly rusty now because I have no reason to type papers or anything with...

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

I'm going to take my time with it and keep at it until I get a few bowls in. (Unless it completely disagrees with me, of course) Thanks for the advice, gary. From a blind sampling perspective, I'd prefer if a milder tobacco such as Best Brown Flake had the heavy tonquin casing so it'd be safer...

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

Roth, I'm going to dedicate a cob to 1792. They are my "standard" pipes. The Country Gentleman is my weapon of choice; the bowl is rather large though, so I will start with it only half filled and smoke as slowly as possible... gary, if a Copenhagen man considers a blend a 10 it must be true! I...

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

Pitchfork, G&H Brown Flake Scented sounds interesting but it is not available to me. (I do love maple and licorice so it sounds like a good combination to me) Unfortunately, also, I have an irrational prejudice against G&H since Top Black Cherry was the first and only blend to make me sick with...

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

So where would Escudo and St James Flake fall on your scale? Did you use my 5 & 6 as a baseline? I've been really intrigued by the 1792 description for years now so I know to expect a strongly flavoured blend high in nicotine - I'm sure I need to try it to discover what all of the buzz is about...

    Samuel Gawith Strength Comparison

On a scale of 1-10, I wanted to know your opinions on the strength of Samuel Gawith St James Flake, Full Virginia Flake, and 1792. To put it in perspective, as a control I consider Escudo a 5 and St. James Flake around a 6. I haven't had the others. (Nor have I had any real strong blends but I...

Becoming More and More Interested in Estates than New Pipes

Value and history combined! I'm not savvy enough to try my hand at restoring them, yet, but an estate pipe that's been brought back to life by someone knowledgeable or one with only minor issues that I can take care of myself is always welcome... I've only got three fixed up drugstore pipes but...

Can't use credit cards to buy loose tobacco online?

It's definitely a big claim to be made out of the blue; if it isn't then they made a very rash proclamation. If it is, then this is a very unfortunate situation for most.

    Erinmore

Bob Tate, he used to work with PM and was a regular poster in the thousands. He did a whack of reviews back in the early days. I don't know if he still has an account or not - nickname was Python.

    Where to start?

Northwoods is the one I want to try most.

    Erinmore

I've heard that the mixture has the stronger fruit casing, while the flake is more complex and a tad stronger. Cutting my flakes into cubes completely changed my outlook on them; you can also rub them out or fold and stuff them but the latter is a pain to light and keep burning.
