Does anyone else find themselves more interested in old pipes than new ones? I didnt used to be but the more i explore old pipes and smoke them the less interested i am in new pipes, maybe im just nostalgic but i just thought i'd see if anyone else was like this.

I like estates a bit too much as evidenced by the fact I have more estates waiting to be cleaned than pipes that are ready to smoke. It is nice to occasionally get a new pipe but estates have such a great value and variety that I'm drawn to them.

I saw a nice Deluxe System Peterson estate at smokingpipes for just over $100 and that's a great deal but it had some excessive reaming issues so that's a deal breaker for me. I've not bought an estate yet but I enjoy looking and when I find the one I will.

Value and history combined!
I'm not savvy enough to try my hand at restoring them, yet, but an estate pipe that's been brought back to life by someone knowledgeable or one with only minor issues that I can take care of myself is always welcome...
I've only got three fixed up drugstore pipes but they are good to have.

It's not too tough to bring them back to great shape if they've been used hard. What's tough for me is if they've had some major damage to the stem, tenon or shank. It's also complicated if they've been water damaged or something of the like.

The only "estate" I have is a meer that I found at an antiques place labelled up as a PLASTIC pipe £4. So I bought it.
Other than that, Estates just seem llike too much hard work to me at this stage... Crikey, I HATE cleaning the ones I got new!!!!

I love the work that goes into restoring estates, and I love hunting for them at antique stores and flea markets. It's almost a separate hobby on it's own.

You got it right ghost, I'm still on the hunt for a pre-republic or patent era Pete and the elusive cheap Dunhill.

Most of my pipes are estates. I am on the search for a pipe made in 1987 my birth year. Wife said I could get any pipe I want from that year but I never realized how how it is to find one.

Thanks, I saw it and drooled a bit but due to circumstance I will not have pipe money for a little while. That is unless I sell more pipes at our local antique store. Last time I put some up, they sold almost instantly. Another vendor now has them for twice the price.

Jack87, 1987 was a great year. I graduated from college. Thanks for making me feel my grey.

Sometimes estate pipes are the way to go, especially since the company that made them is no longer in business.
Plus in the past workers had more pride in their work which tends to indicate better quality in my opinion.

I love buying estate pipes and do so on a regular basis. I still buy new once in a while but I am a sucker for a good deal. I only buy well cared for pristine estates that need nothing. I don't have the tools or desire to ever refurbish a pipe. There are so many great deals between ebay and some of the estate dealers if you know what prices should be and you don't get caught up in a bidding war. I have found that a lot of the lesser names from the Britsh makes like GBD, Sasieni, Comoy, Charatan, Willmer can be had for really low numbers. Many of these pipes are great smokers and in fine condition. Also some great names to look for are Caminetto, Ascorti, Mastro De Paja, Don Carlos, Radice, on the Italian front. You can get real lucky sometimes on Dunhill. Upshalls have been going for a fraction of their original prices, 400-600 dollar Upshalls are going for around 80-150.

got three new pipes in the past 40 years--two broke in easily--the other was a .... well it just didn't--

i'd forgotten how much i don't like breakin' in a new pipe--estates not only have 'old' wood, it's already cured--
that goes a loooonng way in determining my choice--
