November, 2011 - What are you Smoking?

A mystery blend I mixed together with what was left in a Sutliff Great Outdoors tin. There's latakia in it, so it will do on this cloudy November afternoon. :puffy:

    Dark English ...?

I would suspect 5110 as well. If they are getting out of the pipe tobacco biz, it indicates (to me) that they probably didn't have much imagination in renaming their bulk blends.

    Best inexpensive pipe?

Dr. Grabow is the most readily available down at your local drugstore. But I'll tell you, for 25 bucks, I managed to score a Caminetto, two Comoys amd a GBD Rockroot when I went to the West Coast Pipe Show. If you can find your way to a pipe show, there are some smoking deals to be had.

    Orlik alternative?

Dunhill Flake - a little thicker cut than Orlik but I love this stuff. Grassy and sweet. Hamborger Veermaster - a thin cut like Orlik that is very soft and sweet with that haylike essence. Patriot Flake - again a thicker cut than Orlik with a flavor I've seen described as sorghum. I never had...

    Drug store favorites

revs: I would add Amphora to your buying list but it's been discontinued in the USA. Maybe track down some Sail Yellow or Green if you can get it. I found some old pouches of Yellow mummifying behind a supermarket counter. With a little remoistening, they turned out to be pretty great...

Photo from the Las Vegas West Coast Pipe show

Thanks for the pics! This was the first pipe show I attended and I had a great time. I'll be going back again next year. 8)

November, 2011 - What are you Smoking?

Waiting for my bread dough to rise, I have a sweet tooth, so it's Captain Black White in the pipe and fresh coffee in the mug. :puffy:

Just got back from The West Coast Pipe Show - Las Vegas.

My first pipe show and... WOW! I don't have any pics right now because my phone died but I had a great time. I'm on a limited budget but I managed to pick up some great pipes for very little money. There was a gentleman there selling his collection for $5.00 a pipe! Folks were buying them up...

    A TAD Overboard

I've had many (but not all) on your list. Nice representative mix of different 'baccy styles. You will really enjoy Patriot Flake - it's one of my favorite flakes (next to Dunhill Flake which is also on your list!)... Nice haul!

The last of the Dunhill London Mixture in a Savinelli saddle bit billiard. :puffy: Cool and blustery day out here in the desert. Rain is on the way.

What Do You Guys Do With Empty Tins?

I'm restarting this thread because ichbinmuede asked a question regarding the cigar box guitar and I never answered it. I routed a soundhole out of the top of the box to snug fit the lower part of the Dunhill tin. The lip of the upper tin rests against the box top. The bridge floats on top...

    Vegas Pipe Show

Money is a little tight but I think I'll pop in down there and take in my first Pipe Show. To all the out-of-towners - Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas! :puffy:

I Have a Pipe That Only Says Italy.

A lot of those pipes stamped ITALY are "seconds" from manufacturers such as Savinelli or Calibresi. Sometimes they have pits or fills that prevent them from being "firsts" which get the logo stamp of the maker. They are discounted and become "basket" pipes. I personally have many and I like...
