Did you get to smoke your pipes on Christmas?

No pipes for Christmas this year. Trying to downsize. BUT, the wife got me 4oz each of Just For Him's Christmas 2011 blend and Shortcut to Mushrooms. I got to smoke the Christmas blend, the Shortcut, and some Stonehaven while finishing the latest Game of Thrones book: A Dance With Dragons...

Teeth Clencher or Hand Holder/Straight or Bent

I started off with large, bent pipes, usually of an Italian persuasion. I just liked the looks of them. Then I began to light up occasionally in the car on the way to work--a short 30 minute smoke. Very suitable for breaking in pipes, but not so suitable for large pipes you have to hold while...

    Christmas Tobacco

My tentative plan is to open one tin of Christmas Cheer at Christmas every year. I've got a 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, and an 11. But this year, I've got a Jar of the original '92 that has a few more smokes in it, just for the special occasions. This stuff ages like Hellen Mirren.

    Charatan's

Alright Charatan guys, After 3 years of pipe collecting with no Charatans, I am late to the game. However, I've a couple of late acquisitions that are coming on strong into my rotation, and I've got some questions for you experts out there. The top one was my first. It made me gasp when I...

    Walker Briar Works Stem Deoxidizer

I spent many hours trying to use the kit to no avail. Eventually I started making a paste from Barkeeper's Friend. That worked much better. And cheaper.

"Why do you smoke what you don't enjoy?"

I think there are several reasons people tolerate bad smokes. 1. They don't know any better. How many fantastic smokes did you have when you were first starting to smoke a pipe? How did you know what a really good smoke was? 2. You believe the hype about a particular tobacco too much and...

Lighters - Your main and your backup

I bought a leather-clad Pearl lighter from Pipes 2 Smoke about 2 months ago. That thing rules the school. Very dependable and lots of room in the tank as well. Backup is a DJeep disposable. Nice adjustable flames and a wide button for burn-free pipe lighting.

Pipe Smoker Of The Year List

That is the most British list I've ever seen. Although, I wouldnt mind sharing a pint with that Ranulph Fiennes dude. Sounds pretty cool.

What beers are you drinking with your pipe?

I really enjoy a rich Belgian with a pipe. Right now I really like one called the Donker, by Kasteel.

Suggestions for someone new to non-aromatics??

Try Anniversary Kake by Hearth and Home Tobaccos. It's a VaPer w/ a little something extra and a good bit of natural sweetness.

    H&H Anniversary Kake

Great review, Sir! If I smoked all day, this would be my go to blend.

    Best inexpensive pipe?

I would say to look for a good old Stanwell on eBay (that's been taken care of) OR an old Savinelli Canadian. I've had good luck on estates from both of these brands. BTW, you will not be able to beat the quality of smoke from an old and well-broken-in estate pipe, vs a new, cheap pipe.

Only because I care about you guys... Penzance is back!

    Penzance, Shmenzance...Where is the Stonehaven?!?!?!?!?

Why did you start smoking a pipe?

I knew that I liked to smoke--usually good cigars, but I didn't always have 2 hours to dedicate to a good stick. I also knew that the good ones were super-expensive for my college budget at the time. I also knew that my great grandpa, whom I never met, was a pipe smoker. Plus, I'm rather...

Do you smoke when you drive?

I smoke my pipes on the commutes to my school when my son isn't in the car. So on Thursdays and Fridays. This was one of the reasons my pipes have become lighter and smaller and less Italian.

    Hearth & Home Anniversary Kake

It won't come fully "caked" like a lot of kakes. AK is usually well on its way to crumbling by the time it gets to you. But Rhogg is right, it's a lot, and it's delicious!

    oxidized stems?

I'm with olderthandirt. Micromesh has changed it all for me. Great stuff. BUT, unless you want to sand your life away, I recommend a sharp, high carbon steel knife to take off the outer, really bad oxidation first.
