@spartan: I think it affects the EMTs who scrape you up off the road after an accident...just saying ;)

No smoking while driving for me. I smoke for pleasure and relaxation and I want to be alert on the road. Plus I don't want the smell in the car.

I smoke while I drive, but I always pull over to pack and char a bowl. From there on it's pretty much a hands free device. I'm in no rush when I smoke so I don't mind waiting for red lights to tamp.

I smoke when driving for any length of time if I'm alone or with another smoker. I just drove home from Chicago this evening which takes about 5.5 hours not counting stops. I packed 3 pipes before starting my trip home and enjoyed all three. I find that on a long drive it help keep me from feeling tied much like coffee does, so tonight I also included a large Starbucks with an extra shot.
The combo must work because tonight I not only made it home safely, but was able to avoid a deer that decided to run out in front of me while I was traveling at about 78 mph. 8O

Lawrence - are the bent pipes because the air bag bent them?
Nope... just in case.

As for traffic accidents... I've never caused an accident. :nana:

But, I have been rear-ended four times... All of them while I was stopped at Red traffic light.

I particularly enjoy my Saturday morning drive around town to check on my job sites smokes. I Get up late, have tea and breakfast, load up a pipe or 2 depending on how many jobs I have on the go and head out for a nice cruise about town while smoking.

In Las Vegas it's now illegal to talk on the cellphone and drive unless you have a bluetooth. Fines will be awarded starting the first of the year, for the time being it's warnings. I don't talk on the phone when I drive anyways, because one day I was and I pulled out of a shopping plazza and headed south in a north bound lane. Sometimes I will smoke a pipe when I drive. As far as I know it's not illegal. When I do however, I usually smoke the one pipe I just bought as a rotation pipe really cheap and don't mind charring the rim. It can get tricky relighting in the car.

When alone and driving farther than an hour's distance, mainly on the open highway, YES, I smoke a pipe. I enjoy it and it keeps my mind working on those long stretches. I've never had a problem of dozing off while smoking.
I have several "driving pipes" which are smaller the my usual indoor smokers. I always use a lighter when driving. Matches are too big a hassle (and can be dangerous if dropped). Air bags? You'll have more to worry about than your pipe if it comes to that.

I smoke my pipes on the commutes to my school when my son isn't in the car. So on Thursdays and Fridays. This was one of the reasons my pipes have become lighter and smaller and less Italian.

I do pipe when I drive, to control my road rage. The only exception would be with children in my Jeep, which iis illegal here in Louisiana. Fortunately, the only place I usually drive my grandkids to is the playground, which is right down the street from the pipe shop...

Hey for those of you who don't smoke in your car when driving due to concern of the car smelling like smoke you should try ZORBX, the stuff does a great job removing all odors and the best part is that it is unscented so you don't smell it either. I use it in my car and have asked several nonsmokers if they can tell that I smoke in my car and to date everyone has answered no. Now under stand I always crack a window or open the sunroof when smoking. You can find the product at Lowes and some hardware stores in the US, and no I have no affiliation with the company. I first started using it when I was smoking cigars.

I smoke when driving. Back and forth to work it is usually some stinky lat laced blend, with the wife it is normally a mild blend like Celtic Talisman.

if i am awake i am smoking. just like Lawrence i have taken to smoking my bent pipes while driving; not for airbag fears, just because it works better. and i never load a bowl while driving. load one, sometimes two, and give them a charring light before i get going.

I always smoke when I drive if possible. I have a tendency to drive fast and aggressive. If I'm smoking a pipe, and my wife will confirm this, I drive more slowly and defensively.
I have a pretty good technique for tamping and relighting while driving, I drive a five speed too. Never pack while under way though.
