Carreras Craven - The Arcadia - (Antiquarian Nicotiana Brittanica Vol. 20)

You may have missed this one, somewhere between Basra and Piccadilly.

    R.I.P. Nelle Harper Lee

RIP Harper Lee, but IMHO your Carson McCullers shot all and any mockingbird before it could reach maturity.

    Zombie Threads

I'm with Andy. Starcat wore only polyester, loved a good spin cycle and ended up holding the franchise to several furniture outlets in the Mid-West.

    Rim darkening

All this talk of saliva has me drooling for a fresh zombie-thread. The one about "thoroughly sanitized" estate pipes, perhaps :-)?

Straight Prince: Is There Such a Thing?

As I've been lead to believe, if it's straight it's not a prince but a tomato or an apple or what have you. A true prince should have a slight bend in the stem.

I need someone to make me this type of pipe

That Weaver in torque's collection is really stunning. Wonderful blast and I love that craggy rim.

    Flying Dutchman Pipe Tobacco

Niemeijer ceased production of FD a few years ago. Any Flying Dutchman still around is old stock.

    Yikes!! Sorry Norway.

Since the late seventies, Norway has tried to ban alcohol as best they could: when I was last there, the beer contained a measly 2% alcohol, a bottle of Johnny Walker Red went for around $90 and you'd have to buy that in an establishment that resembled Fort Knox. The result was that almost every...

    Showoff Your Dunhill Pipes Here!

My favourite Dunhill. It's tiny, but smokes like a dream:

An open letter (suggestion) to Mr. Oullette and Mr Pease

I'd certainly be willing to try Cavalry Kake, on Calvary Kake I'd have some reservations :D

    The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

When this thread was started I had never read a single page of Conan Doyle's writing. A serious lack in my education, both in general and as a pipesmoker I'll admit, but it has been seen to: after the first twohundred pages of The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes I'm very happy to have another...

    Unknown Amphora Blend

These pots can still be found occasionally on flea-markets and garage-sales here in Holland. "Zenith" was the manufacturer of the pots which were used as promotional material in tobacconists' shops. The company also made pipes and their double-walled porcelain pipes still have a substantial...

    Nightcap plug

It was not my auction, but I can show you what said samples look like: There was indeed also a very simple form on A5-size that came with them, but I seem to have lost that...

    Nightcap plug

As an aside: Dunhill did consider a latakia plug, around the turn of the century. I believe samples were handed out on either the 2000 or 2001 CPC-show in three grades, labeled latakia plug, latakia plug medium and latakia plug mild.

What Happened To "What Are You Reading"

I'm reading "The End" by Ian Kershaw. It deals extensively with the questions of how and why the Germans kept on fighting after D-Day, when said end had become both obvious and inevitable. On the backburner is "Mason & Dixon" by Thomas Pynchon, a great read but slow going for someone whose first...

Cartoon / fictional characters that smoke a pipe, and what pipe?

My favourite: I wouldn't dare to take a guess at Zippy's favourite blend, though. Spun polyester, maybe...

    Request for Book Recommendations

Hacker has two more titles to his name: "Rare Smoke: The Ultimate Guide to Pipe Collecting" (ISBN 0-931253-10-1) and "Pipesmoking: A 21st Century Guide" (ISBN 0-931253-13-6). The best in general reference I think is Alexis Liebaert and Alain Maya's "The Illustrated History of the Pipe" (ISBN...

What Do Pipe Smokers Do For A Living?

I'm a lockmaster, mostly operating historical locks on tidal water.

    Peanut Butter...Skippy or Jif

To me, as an aficionado of all things peanut, there is a marked difference in taste between American brands like Skippy or Jif and the European domestic brands. I suspect it's in the oils: AFAIK, the former use a percentage of cottonseed oil, the latter rapeseed, sunflower or a combination of...

    Onions?

Hardly a day goes by here without an onion in the pan, but my favourite is this: take 5 pounds of onions and about two pounds of beef, preferably a cheaper cut. Dice the onions, fry them gently in butter until soft, add the diced beef, a bay leaf, two or three cloves, a decent sized piece of...
