Straight Prince: Is There Such a Thing?

Every since I got my churchwarden with a Prince bowl, I've been looking for a regular straight pipe with a Prince bowl. I found only one, in Italy, very expensive. Does anyone know of one her in the States?

I can't remember those Dunhills, since I'm not a Dunhill guy, but they have dominance in the shape, in my mind, so I'll accept that. The essential shape does have a slight bend in the stem, but most shapes have variations.

I have a little LiteWate "student prince"...

I guess they called them that just because of the beadline?

I have no idea really?

Many of the older makers had straight princes in their shape catalogs,

but they do seem scarce on the contemporary scene.

I have a Dunhill straight prince. I prefer those with slight curved stems though.

The Peterson 408 is also unusual - not quite a Prince, not quite a student, not quite an author. Close enough?

Also the old Comoy's shape 339. I have a 339P, the paneled version, nice little pipe.

They're out there, they just aren't common. I think that French brand SP.com revived has one.

Another thing to consider, without the slight bend, many sellers will list/label the pipe a "straight apple".

That's a fantastic pipe, but an ever so subtle bend would take it up a notch (in my opinion).

A prince bowl is shorter, wider at the base and rim proportionally to an apple. It's subtle but it's there. Or should be. No universally agreed-upon standards exist so a lot of pipe shapes fall between the cracks.

There are lots of straight Prince-shape pipes out there, but, as others have said, they are often mislabeled. Once upon a time the bent version of the Prince shape was its own shape: Prince of Wales.

The 07 in the shape number is Dunhill's number for their prince shape -- this one is 3107, where 3 indicates size and the 1 indicates a straight stem. The standard prince (bent) in the same size is numbered 3407.

In my interpretation, the straight prince needs to have a straight shank and stem, but the bowl has to be slightly forward canted. Like the Comoy 552 in the diagram above, notice the forward movement that the slight cant in the bowl projects.

As I've been lead to believe, if it's straight it's not a prince but a tomato or an apple or what have you. A true prince should have a slight bend in the stem.
