    Bare Minimum Pipe Rotation

Bare minimum for two bowls a day? I would think you could get by with one pipe--assuming you smoke to the bottom and do basic cleaning after each smoke. I think two would be plenty. Given that you smoke both VA and occasional English, I'd say go for three--dedicating one to latakia. Even if you...

What’s Your Top Choices For Virginias?

I think most people would class it as a burley blend, rather than a VA, and I understand that it has noticable flavorings--though I've never had it, so I can't say for sure. If you are experimenting with VAs you really should try Orlik Golden Sliced. Not because it's the best, but just because...

Is There Something Lurking In Our Beloved Perique?

And you all thought that peppery bite and smell of dirty socks was the fermentation.

Help! Good substitutes for two beloved (and discontinuted) VA flakes

Wow, lot's of great comments and recommendatiosn. Thanks all. Last time I tried it, I really disliked 507-c. That said, it wasn't aged at all. So maybe if I come back to it in another four years I'll like it. And Union Square is definitely growing on me. I think it might just hit the carving...

Help! Good substitutes for two beloved (and discontinuted) VA flakes

No, but I'll put it on my list. I'll have to try this too. Sounds promising. Does it have any of that vinegar-with-sweet combination that you get in 2010 (people call it "catsup")? That's really integral to what made 2010 what it was for me, and my fear is that McClelland was the only blender...

Help! Good substitutes for two beloved (and discontinuted) VA flakes

I don't want to be an ass, but that's exactly what I did. And these were the two tobaccos that I liked best. I'll plan to give Opening Night a try. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm smoking Union Square at the moment (on lightmybriar's suggestion). It is really good. I can see why the two of...

Help! Good substitutes for two beloved (and discontinuted) VA flakes

lightmybriar: I'll have to try Union Square, I have some on my shelf, so I may go light it up now. I'm really sorry to hear that you have given up on finding a replacement for 2010. It is just too good to die. Someone needs to imitate it. (If there are any blenders out there that want to give...

Help! Good substitutes for two beloved (and discontinuted) VA flakes

Capstan yellow is pretty close, but I could definitely tell them apart in a blind test (CY has the distinctive capstan flavor, which is really quite good in is own right, but also distinct). It may be as good as I can get for a substitute. Another close match I can think of is SG Best Brown...

Help! Good substitutes for two beloved (and discontinuted) VA flakes

Two of my absolute favorite Virginia flakes are no longer available, and I didn't get a chance to cellar nearly enough of either. Can anyone recommend a good substitute for either of them? They are: Dunhill (Light) Flake--I don't think this one needs a description. McClelland 2010 (Classic...

Is There Something Lurking In Our Beloved Perique?

I don't think there are many people in a position to offer a reasonable reply to OP, simply because way too many details are missing. First and foremost: What are the chemicals being released in the parish? (We'd need to know what they are before we can assess how they are absorbed or stored by...

    Rehydration techniques

Drum was my standard for years. Samson was a fall-back in the US when I couldn't find Drum. In Rome, Old Holborn was go-to (I've never seen it in the US).

    Tongue Bite Question

I have been in your shoes, tempted to abandon pipes because of scorched tongue. In my experience, the problem did not just go away (as though my tongue got calloused or something). My advice (most of which others have given above): --Dry your tobacco. Try leaving it till its crisp (multiple days...

So Are West Virginians Really Hillbillies?

Here are my 2 pence: What do you mean by "hillbilly"--The term originally referred to the people--predominantly Scotts Irish immigrants--who lived in the Appalachians, on land that no one else wanted because--despite its beauty--it was remote and not suited for farming. They were remarkably...

    Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

Let us know what you think. Bulleit Rye is good, you could do a lot worse as an intro. In fact it's my daily nightcap, when I can keep it in stock. My all-time favorite rye is Catoctin Creek, Roundstone Rye. I just checked their website, and apparently it is now available in the UK. It might...

    Switching from Cigarettes

Your taste is yours, and I think it is irresponsible of people to tell you that something will be too strong for you. The only way to figure out what you like is to try a couple examples from each of the major classes. Saltedplug made some solid recommendations. Under VAs I'd add Dunhill...

    Vacuum Sealed Tobacco Tins

I seem to remember Pease saying (not in the above linked article), or at least implying, that the reaction that causes aging in tobacco is anaerobic; thus, opening the tin stops aging. If you reseal it, the aging clock resets so to speak. I could be wrong. For that matter, as far as I know, he...

    Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

Either Woodford Reserve or Eagle Rare is going to be good stuff, noticeably better than either Jim Beam or Bulleit. Have you tried rye? IMHO, that's where it's at. Bourbon gets too sweet after a while, but rye has a fantastic depth of flavor.

    Cheaper Wooden Pipes

You should be. In the middle of a move, I found myself overnight at a friend's house. He offered me some Sixpence, which had been on my must-try list for months. As I was in the middle of a move and visiting, I didn't have a pipe with me. So I drove out to a cigarette shop to get grab a basket...
