    Question About Irish Whiskey

That makes sense. Knappogue Castle does use bourbon barrels.

    Question About Irish Whiskey

Most Irish whiskey has no noticeable peat in it. But a couple do (the most famous is probably Connemara). You inspired me to go back to what's left of a bottle of Knappogue Castle 12 year I had sitting on the shelf for the last couple years. Lots of flavor, and some clear peatiness. But still...

Have You Ever Had a Pipe Blend That Made You Feel Slightly Ill?

I've had pipes makes me feel uneasy, my throat would get tight and it felt like I had indigestion and heartburn. I'm not sure what caused it. It seems to have had to do with moisture in the pipe (I had a couple of pipes for a while that didn't pass cleaners, and this was before I knew to dry...

    Do You Smoke Clay Pipes?

I don't, but I want to try. Can anyone recommend a specific model (available in the US at a reasonable price--I'm thinking $15 or less) that is smokable? I know there have been general recommendations upthread for various makers, but a lot of them are sold out or have lots of different models...

How Rare is this 19th C Porcelain Pipe?

From the picture, it doesn't look like real gilding. The artwork doesn't look all that exquisite to me (again, though, the picture isn't especially good.) Unless there is something unique about it, I'd imagine you are looking at 100 rather than 10,000. Not having a stem can't help the value. As...

    Ok, I’ve Just Gone Codger!!

I just picked up some CH and SWR on a whim yesterday. These old blends have been around forever, so I feel like I need to try them out. But I'm a straight VA sort of guy and I can smell the flavoring (and only the flavoring, no detectable tobacco) through the sealed pouch. I don't know if I can...

    SP has Samuel Gawith

You may have better information that I have, but I was under the impression that explanation of Dunhill's dropping their pipe tobaccos was unsubstantiated speculation, speculation that, furthermore, never made much sense to me: considering they continued to market Dunhill cigarettes. Similarly...

    SP has Samuel Gawith

What I find really confusing and frustrating is that on the one hand there is so much demand for good tobacco that tobacconists can't keep SG in stock (and we mere mortals can only rarely get our hands on it) while Dunhill and McClellands can't stay in business. Very weird market. Isn't there...

First week - Many, Many Questions... Beginner help pls!

Yes, it is probably more than you think. It probably looks like twice what would comfortably fit in the bowl. But how much in any absolute sense will depend on the size of the bowl. From your description, it sounds like you aren't putting enough in and not packing tightly enough (although, as...

    Tolkien's tobacco( almost)

The one scathing review I read made it sound like the movie isn't all that serious as a work of biography: "Tolkien’s defining love of language never comes into focus in a memorably cinematic way. . . . Unhappily, among the omissions is all but the barest mention of the role of Catholicism in...

Hairline crack inside of bowl: is the pipe ruined?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I don't understand. It seems to me that a crack occurs because the part that cracked was being pulled or pushed apart. So if the expansion of the cake caused the crack in the briar, then I wouldn't expect the cake to be cracked. The cake is what's...

Has Anyone Ever Eaten Pemmican? It Sounds Utterly Disgusting!

It sounds a lot like a confit. At least it's the same principle: preserving meat by sealing it in its own fat.

    Tolkien's tobacco( almost)

This is one of those questions I wonder about: It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that (many) the-timers tended to stick to one blend. For one thing, I doubt the people on this forum are really representative of contemporary pipe-smokers as a whole; we are the ones who care enough about...

Hairline crack inside of bowl: is the pipe ruined?

That was the first thing I thought; but if the problem was the cake expanding faster than the briar, the crack should have started on the outside and gotten smaller as it went in (since in that case, the briar was being forced to expand too far, and thus, the briar furthest from the cake would...

    First Cob

I have one cob. Ilt has definitely grown in me. It took me about 8-10 smokes to break in. It still gives a favor to the tobacco but so does briar, and the flavor of chared cob goes really well with the flavor of straight tobacco.

Hairline crack inside of bowl: is the pipe ruined?

Okay, embeding images is too hard for me. But here are links: 1: Outside of the bowl 2: rim 3: rim, straight on

I was afraid you'd say that. Let's see if this works:

Hairline crack inside of bowl: is the pipe ruined?

I have a very small (small bowl and thin walls) billiard. The other day, I noticed that the outside of the bowl wasn't round--there was a slight change in the curvature of the outside. When I looked in the bowl, there was a hairline crack running down from the rim. It doesn't look big enough to...

    All Natural Aromatics

Cosmic beat me to it: a "chemical" taste can come from natural stuff too. Also, as to the taste of PG, what jfred said. One reason I will never take up vaping is that PG is cloyingly sweet. You can't make a PG based-liquid that tastes like anything other than unicorn farts.
