What Do Pipe Smokers Do For A Living?

Retired. Formerly in photography, retail, restaurant business.

What is the chimney shape pipe good for?!?

Good if you like a big stinky dottle.

    When Is A Pipe Pretentious?

When it pretends to be better than it is.

    Help?

You can get an acceptable smoke from any of the three types of pipes you mention. I would rate them as: briar #1, Meerschaum #2, cob #3. But only if it is a really good briar. If cost is a factor cobs would be #1, meers#2. You can get a better smoke dollar for dollar with a Meer, than a briar...

    Most Underrated Shape

Funny, before I saw your selection I thought Dunhill Prince. Even the bent ones are easy to get a cleaner through and the extra wood does make for a cooler smoke. I have 11 of them.

    Volcanos

I have 3 by Lasse Skovgaard. They smoke well, but I don't smoke them often. I am getting lazy with age and it is just less trouble to smoke a straight or slightly bent pipe.

    Problem with new Peterson

The best thing to do is to put it aside and get a straight pipe. Check that a cleaner goes thru easily before buying it.

Got Any Pipes That Smoke Better Than You Ever Expected?

Yes most of them smoke better than expected. When I was a teen, my pipes did not smoke as well. I only had a dozen or so. When I could afford a lot of pipes, they smoked much better. Why? They had more time to dry out. A few weeks is best between smokes.

Why is a Shell Briar So Called?

I got so interested in this discussion that I let my pipe go out. I got my first Dunhill in around 1958-9. I hated the way it smoked. I tried to get a good smoke out of it for a few years, then finally threw it away. (I recently saw one of a similar date on Ebay, same shape and finish, bid up to...

Found out my great-great grandmother was a cob smoker

My grandmother was the daughter of the guy who owned the town brewery in eastern Europe. I was always proud of her for that. She had me drinking dark beer with sour cream on top. It didn't quite work. I think their sour cream was more liquid.

    No Love for a Pipe

Glad you got it back. I went through a similar but worse experience. I was sitting on a bench at the Hudson River pier near Christopher Street, with the woman I was lucky(or foolish) enough to marry later. When we left I failed to pick up my camera bag from the bench. It had a Leica M6 and lens...

    Favorite Pipe Smoking Musician

I didn't know Mingus was a pipesmoker. He sure didn't fit the type, being easily angered. But if he was, he was surely on top. The Mingus recordings of the 50s are some of the greatest music ever made. I was lucky to see him live twice.

Man Sued For Smoking in his Own Home

I had a similar problem. The next door neighbors in my NYC apt. bldg. objected to the smoke. I took the advice I got here and never admitted I smoked indoors. Fortunately they moved out.

Charatan Authentic Pipes: Can Their Image be Rehabilitated?

I use to hang out at the Lane Ltd. store on 42nd street, in the mid 1950s. I bought 3-4 new Charatans from them. They were all beautiful pieces of briar, masterfully made. And they all tasted of the red stain Charatan used at that time. They were highly over rated. I do not recall what happened...

    The Gurgling Pipe

Michigan: I haven't heard of "wacky weed" in maybe 35 years. Gurgling happens. Just use a pipecleaner while smoking.

    Your "Go-To" Blends

I have a large and varied stock of tobaccos ageing. But "go to" are two: Bombay Court and Dunhill Standard. Both have Virginia, Lat and Turkish and both are subtle. The Dunhill is stronger.

    Pacquio vs Mayweather

I am rethinking my opinion about this fight and am beginning to believe Manny has a good chance. He is training entirely at the Wild Card gym in LA, not the usual camp in the Philippines; he is a few years younger and his legs appear in better shape. Floyd can be hurt when cornered on the ropes...

At Last - A Mark Twain Peterson!

It looks like an older one. I got one of these new a few years ago and the grain had been painted on with stains. That experience finally turned me against Peterson. Then I found a filling in a $200 pipe.

    Good Old Bing!!

    Enjoyed it thanks. Some Crosbys.
