    I don't understand rusticated pipes

Even high quality briar often has flaws. Rustication is a way to save a flawed block. You are right there was no such thing years ago.

    How dry is too dry?

It is a matter of personal taste. For me, if it turns into powder when squeezing it, a tobacco is too dry.

What Is The Lifespan Of A Briar Pipe?

It depends on how much it has been smoked. The only pipe I have had that became oversmoked was my 1958 Wilke, which I got new. It was smoked every few days for almost 50 years. I can still smoke it, but a one month rest period is best.

We all know Santa is a pipe guy, but what do you think he smokes?

It turns out that St. Nicholas was probably Turkish, so he most likely, if he really was a smoker, smoked a meerschaum. There are some people who think he was Greek though. What tobacco? I would guess it was Turkish.

Seeking advice for a purchase of a new Dunhill

James Barber is the lowest priced place for Dunhills that I have found. Alpascia is a little higher, but by the time you get done with the shipping costs they are about the same. There is a price control in the USA which makes the pipes cost as much as $200 more in this country. Also, the best...

    Difference between Poker and Cherrywood

What is called a cherrywood is patterned after real cherry pipes made years ago. They were very large with long shanks made of a separate piece of wood. I threw mine out after trying for years to get a good smoke out of it.

    Beard Oil: What Is It?

A little hair conditioner once in a great while is all that is needed.

Why so cheap, 1980s Dunhill ?

MSO: I paid $22. new for my first Dunhill in 1958 or 59. It was a smooth panel with a finish that looked like the amber roots, which did not yet exist. The popular belief that Dunhills got worse after the sixties just isn't true. The prices did go up even after adjusted for inflation.

    Dunhill decision....

Get the County. It is a far better smoke, and the best value in the Dunhill line.

    Dunhill pipe opinion please.

Dear Layinpipe: I guess I should change my site name to Just Plain Stupid, because I have 100 Dunhills. Even worse, they were all bought new in this century. But, stupid or not, I enjoy them enormously. I don't ever buy used pipes for two reasons. If a pipe has been smoked too much it gets, to...

I'm About to Pull the Trigger on a Dunhill

Chestnuts smoke well, the black shell has a bitter taste. These pipes are overpriced. Check the site of James Barber, an old time English tobacconist to compare prices. You can save up to $150. after paying for shipping.

What Is The Obsession With Hipsters

OK, I read a lot of the comments. It seems that if you have a pipe, a beard, long hair, a flat cap and a Leica you are an hipster. Apparently I am one. Well, one of those things will have to go. I might have to sell my Leicas. Or would I rather keep them and get rid of the tweed caps? I am...

What Is The Obsession With Hipsters

I confess I haven't read all the comments, but what is an hipster? Could someone provide a definition.

    HappyThanks Giving To All

Bradley: I never told my parents that I could forge both their signatures effectively. As far as an ass beating at home, forget it. I just didn't permit it. As far as Thanksgiving goes, I am thankful nobody bothered me, and am hoping for the same non event for xmas.

    Smoking Pipes vs. Smoking Cigars

Pipesmoking has the advantage in at least two areas: taste, and cost. Cigars are good if you can't fuss with a pipe. I used to smoke them when I was a business executive. There just wasn't time for a pipe during the day.

    What are your other hobbies?

The word hobby offends me. It diminishes the value of what you do. Yes, I can understand that if someone with no real interests collects matchbooks, that is a hobby. But pipesmoking is not a hobby it is a way of life.

USA.gov says today is the Great American Smokeout Day

Smokeout Day? To hell with the meddling government. I haven't adjusted to income tax and women voting yet.
