Is there a definitive difference between the two? I thought that the difference was that a poker has a straight stem and a cherrywood bent stem. However, I've seen pipes with bent stems listed as pokers. So I'm wondering, what's the difference?
Thanks.

A bent Poker is called a Cherrywood. That aside, a poker should always sit. A cherrywood might not sit while the bowl is empty, though they most frequently do.

What is called a cherrywood is patterned after real cherry pipes made years ago. They were very large with long shanks made of a separate piece of wood. I threw mine out after trying for years to get a good smoke out of it.

I like the definitive point of the cherrywood having the bottom of the bowl cut at an angle.

That keeps it clear. I have a La Rocca poker (flat cut) and a Parker cherrywood, that both

smoke well. Not fancy pipes, but properly drilled.
I also have what I would call a poker/pot where the bowl does not extend below the shank.

It's carved of Mountain Laurel and has a subtle irregularity that gives it a pleasant sort of

zen accent, like the irregularity of Japanese pottery.
