    Pipe-picking Score: Three Kaywoodies

True; and the jury is still out! LOL Thanks guys! Much appreciated info! I love the look and feel so I have high hopes for it. Thanks, Ed. Yes, it is; I think they were only made in 66-68 (or close to that) and I've been looking for one in a shape and price I was good with so I got very...

Tamper Carving- What Tools Do You Use?

Preparing for the tamper exchange (I hope) I am thinking about trying to carve some from stone/semiprecious gems. What tools would I use? Dremel bits?

    Pipe-picking Score: Three Kaywoodies

Thanks, Pat. It's a shame when a guy has to go 300 miles to score something cool, huh?

That is a beauty! I, too, have admired Jay's work for some time now and hope to acquire one of his pieces

    Pipe-picking Score: Three Kaywoodies

The pipe-picking has been slim for me this year but today I hit a nice little score while out of town: 3 Kaywoodies that I've either been wanting or just like all in one spot! First up, an extra long Canadian Super Grain, 73S. Unfortunately this stinger is clipped on this one. Next is a Relief...

    Tamper Exchange 2014

Polish up a coin - penny or dime - and epoxy it to the bottom.

    Pipe parts:

I agree. I actually thought about editing the Pipe Parts segments together for myself - but would really rather wait on you to do it "professionally".

    Quick Question About Flakes

Nicely said, Russ. I, too, think experimentation is the key. And as you find out what works for you and your blend/pipe you can have a lot of enjoyable, relaxing time. :puffy:

    Restoring Peterson 317 Rusticated

A brass bristle brush (not too vigor soy used) with some diluted Murphy's oil soap or just some saliva and a cotton cloth takes off a lot of crud. If it's real "thick" you can use a little isopropyl alcohol, too, but it can lighten/remove stain so be careful, depending on how you want it to...

    Tamper Exchange 2014

I was just thinking about this a week or so ago so imagine my delight to pop in and find this threads today! Now to get myself in the creative mode and make something. :puffy:

    Preferred Staining Method

If not you might try their British Tan. Any if their dyes you can dilute, also, with isopropyl alcohol to get a lighter shade.

    Commissioned Pipe, Expect Inclusions/Pockmarks?

I don't think it's ever going to be smooth to the touch. Many if not most carvers use wax, not a shellac or lacquer, as the finish coat. Wax, even if use to "fill" the spots will eventually melt/wear away. One of the other harder finishes might act as a fill but I doubt that the cost of this...

    Preferred Staining Method

I use Fiebing's as well as a few others: furniture scratch cover markers, EcoFlo water based leather dye and even Kiwi colored shoe polish a time or two, depending on the look I'm going for. I almost always set the color with either a flame or heat gun.

    Rick Black Pipes?

He is mostly a Facebook and YouTube user, as far as I know. I have heard both good and bad, as would be expected about any (new) carver. You might look at his FB group "Rick Black Pipes". His real name is Rick Kopf, by the way, and he;s based out of NM.
