Tamper Exchange 2014

Here's mine. Made from Honey Locust with a brass tip. It's 3 1/2" long.

We have about two more weeks. This is open to all skill levels and matrials.

I have been working on mine for this and I'm about finished. Only problem now is a metal end for it. A buddy of mine goes shooting and he said he would give me some casings but he has canceled his trip twice already and I'm not sure he will go before these will be "due".
What are some things other people use that will look nice? I don't want to just put a screw or nail into the bottom of a tamper I put so much time into.

A metal tip is not required, but is often added to tampers. I went to a gun shop near me and bought a bag of 45 casings and also 38s. I make lots of tampers. If you really want a casing, you could stop at a gun shop and ask for one. They probably will give it to you.

Polish up a coin - penny or dime - and epoxy it to the bottom.

Ejames, that is a new design for you. I like it.

Yeah,every now and then I like to do something different than the internal pick tampers. Sure wish I had a small wood lathe,would make it much easier. I'm somewhat limited on what I can turn on my little metal lathe.

So I went to the hardware store after work this morning and picked up some heavy duty magnets for the metal tip. I just needed to put a metal tip on it to complete it and keep it from charring the wood. The stain is drying on mine now and I will post up pics as soon as I get the tip on it.

So I have officially finished my first tamper that I started over a year ago for last years exchange. I missed the deadline and just put it down for another time and just forgot about it. I sanded it a bit more,stained and sealed it, and finally added the magnetic bottom to it. I just feel it needed one and didn't want to char the bottom. It's going to be hard to give this up since it's my first and I LOVE how it feels in my hand. As I was making it I mapped out the different positions it would sit in my hand and formed it to fit. I had to give it a trial run so here is my set up for it.

That is a cool looking tamper. I received a tamper in the last exchange that looked odd, but if fits my hand in an amazing way. Be sure to make another tamper for your own use.

Thank you very much, I believe it is made of oak? I really don't know but that's my guess. It is actually made from a corner shelf that was in my bedroom. I wasn't going to use it and I can never throw anything away so I kept it and here it is reborn HAHA.

Well this is my first tamper and I almost hate to part with it but what better place to do it than here! It is made from an old piece of oak that was used in the printing industry in the 1950's. It is almost as light as balsa and and hard as, well, oak. Turned on new lathe, sanded down to 600, wiped on/off a black stain, then a golden stain, followed by one coat of tung oil, then buffed and waxed. Very comfortable in the hand.
