C&D Big and Burley; D&R Picayune

I've realized that my rotation is quite lacking in Burley--really, Five Brothers is the only blend that in my rotation that's really burley-based, so I gave two others a try in my last order: Cornell and Diehl's Big & Burley No. 103 and Daughters and Ryan's Picayune. Tin Note and Preparation...

    Samuel Gawith Black XX Twist

It's a good question, but I've been smoking such a short time I don't know anything about aging yet! From what I read, the SG Black XX is a bit heavier and more oily than the GH, but I'm sure they're quite similar. Yes, I had a similar reaction at first. It seems like a flattering comparison...

    Aromatic Dumping Ground

I often mix blends when I only have a tiny bit left, but I generally confine it to similar blends. I'll mix vanilla aros, or Balkans, or whatever. To be clear, I generally smoke it down to where there's only a tiny bit left and then dump them together. It's a nice little experiment for the final...

You Spin Me Right Round Baby...

Two families of tobacco hit me with a lot of nicotine: the Tanzanian Virginias and strong Burleys. Gawith ropes and flakes are a good place to go for the first group. Any of the brown twists are potent, as are 1792 Flake, Dark Flake, etc. Dunhill Royal Yacht is another classic blend in this...

Black Irish Twist Vs. Brown Bogie

It was the Samuel Gawith. Review is up here.

    Samuel Gawith Black XX Twist

I'm a big fan of the Gawith brown twists, so I was excited to give the renowned Black XX a try. I'd heard quite a bit about it, and as is usually the case, it was the polarizing nature of this blend that piqued my interest. Those who like it say it's like eating a steak. Those who don't say it's...

Pipe Tobacco like a high quality Black & Mild

There are some people who will complain about tongue bite on every single aromatic they smoke, but these folks likely just doesn't like aromatics and/or are smoking them wrong. As aros go, Lane 1Q smokes beautifully. The same is true of BCA. That said, the Eric Stokkebye might not be that...

Pipe Tobacco like a high quality Black & Mild

Most of those type favors are lost in the tongue quite a bit, unfortunately. There are plenty of aros with a profile similar to Black and Milds, but you might experience the same disparity between room note and flavor with most of them.

Black Irish Twist Vs. Brown Bogie

Received it and smoked yesterday. It's quite different. I like it, but no as much as the brown rope. I wasn't expecting the "cooking meat" description to be so literal. It literally smells like a barbecue. When I took a first few whiffs I was outside and I actually thought I was just catching...

I Have Not Defected To Cigars

I'm actually tempted to try it. I'm watching a video on rolling cigars right now, and I kind of think I could do it.

    Pure Virginia With Light Topping?

They are indeed strong! On an interesting note, the Gawith Hoggarth & Co.: Sweet Whiskey actually vaguely fits your description: it is straight VA, but African and Indian-grown, and probably a lot more potent than what you were thinking in your original post. Furthermore, it has a very, very...

Britain Out, Pound Down, Gawith Up?

Let me qualify this. I meant to write "not all of the signatures are legit." I didn't mean to imply none were, but since you can only go back and edit for a short time, once I re-read my post I realized I couldn't edit it.

Black Irish Twist Vs. Brown Bogie

Ah, you guys are scaring me now, as I have a tin of SG XX on its way right now. It kept being sold out, but I finally managed to snag one. Fortunately for me, I have this against-the-grain attitude that makes me like blends that I hear bad things about. That said, if you guys are brown rope fans...

    Resealing an Opened Tin

That might work OK, but a mason jar just seems like less hassle to me. I tried plastic bags, but the tobacco dried out at a surprising rate, for something that's supposedly airtight.

Britain Out, Pound Down, Gawith Up?

The petition was created in May by (ironicaly) a LEAVE supporter who thought the vote would go the other way. The signatures aren't legit: Hundreds of thousands of signatures (maybe even over a million?) were put there as a 4chan prank. They set up autovoter bots to add millions of signatures.

    Aesthetics Question Survey

My family are musicians, and I'm a wet-behind-the-ears Asst. Prof. of Literature at a small private university, so I do enjoy art quite a bit, but not much of the visual kind. That's an interesting collection you have there. As far as the figurines, it looks like a blend of Greco-Roman and...

I Have Not Defected To Cigars

I have had a similar experience. I feel that the cigar leaf is actually a lower in nicotine content (or whatever content that I can absorb), but it is simply a very large amount of tobacco--i.e., if I sliced it and smoked it in a pipe, it would be quite a few bowls. So, a medium amount of...

    Tobacco in the UK

GQ Tobaccos is good, I believe.

Britain Out, Pound Down, Gawith Up?

Actually, now that I think of it, Brexit could be great for Gawith, since the EU Commission has basically made it its goal to crush the tobacco industry. I'll leave it to the experts in the legislation forum to sort out the specifics in the short run, but if you think in the big picture that a...

    Yum. That's quite a list.
