Just a little lakeland, but not too much.

While the RDH is said to be strong... it is incredibly smooth and slow burning... The flavor is really good... more floral than perfumey in my opinion. I find Ennerdale to be more perfumy or harsh, while RDH is easier to smoke... Just sayin' it might be worth a try.
What other blends have you tried that have a strong lakeland flavor, because I don't know any outside of the H+G blends.

I have tried Condor, St. Bruno and London Dock. I found Condor and St. Bruno to be very good, but London Dock... not so much! I think it had a very strong tonquin bean essence added to it and I was tasting it for a good while after the smoke.

London Dock was bad enough to put me off of Lakeland blends. St. Bruno and Condor were good enough to get me curious about them again. I haven't had much experience with them so far other than those 3 blends.

oldredog - I looked up G&H Louisiana Flake on TobaccoReviews.com and read some of the reviews, it doesn't look like it has any Lakeland essence in it. It does however look like a nice Va/Per, so I might order some one of these days, but I'm not sure it belongs on this list of Light Lakelands.
pitchfork - I added Best Brown #2 and Kendal Cream Flake to the list. There are 12 tobacco's on the list to try, definitely enough to find a winner or 2, thanks.
1.Glengarry Flake

2. Kendal Flake

3. Dark Flake Scented

4. Peterson Hyde Park

5. Best Brown Flake

6. Bob's Chocolate Flake

7. Tsuge First Days of Spring

8. Scottish Flake

9. Revor Plug

10. Kendal Rum Flake

11. Best Brown #2

12. Kendal Cream Flake

Markthelad, it is indeed a great Va per. But as with all thing's GH it has a twist in that there is a little coca floral hint that nudges it into the lakeland light territory!

Mind you your list will give you much smoking pleasure, especially the Revor Plug. :puffy:

The title of this thread is an oxymoron. There is no such thing as a little lakeland. Even the tiniest bit is too much. If someone lit a bowl of Ennerdale right now, in England, and there was a gentle breeze blowing in a westerly direction, smog alerts would go up all along the US east coast.
I got a free sample of Peterson's Hyde Park when I bought a Peterson pipe. I chose Hyde Park because it was listed as an English blend. It is the only Lakeland I ever smoked. Well, to be technically correct, I made it past the charring light and several puffs into the real light before being decked by the taste and aroma, which I can only liken to what I would imagine smoking shreds of the silk lining from one of my grandmother's purses.

Lasttango. Thanks for the heads up on the RDH. I've not tried it because I thought it was unavailable in the States. I'm going to order this one and the Peretti's Original Blend. I'm always looking for a new Lakeland!
Edit* Where can I find Peretti's Original Blend?

Be sure to update this thread as you try some of those blends. I'm interested in hearing your take on them. I've got two new tobaccos coming my way as a result of this thread. Thanks!

Yes it's best brown #2 by G&H I'm referring too, not best brown flake by SG. I also wouldn't get the unscented flakes as at first you can detect a bit of the lakeland flavor but as you get used to it you don't detect it anymore. Like BB#2 is a scented flake but I hardly detect the lakeland flavor in that anymore, and it's much more prominent than the unscented flakes. I have to say though G&H kendal flake is the first "full" lakeland I tried and I found there to be mostly a tobacco taste, unless I was given the wrong sample. There was more a citrus taste than anything.

hawky, will do. I just ordered some Bob's Chocolate Flake, Kendal Flake and Scotch Flake, so I'm really looking forward to recieving those sometime next week, I can't wait to try them. BTW hawky, thanks for the input and keeping me inspired about these blends.
andy really makes G&H Best Brown #2 sound good, but P&C was out of that, so I may try to order it from SP next week.

Thanks andy!

I bought an old tin of the original Kentucky Club version of London Dock a while back in an antique shop. It had been opened at some point, so I think it had not aged well, because it was terrible. The tobacco was a little dry but still smokeable after a little rehydration.

London Dock is currently made by Daughters and Ryan, I was curious about it as well, so I bought a tin. While it was better than the older original tin, it still wasn't great.

I have heard good things about the version from Milan Tobaccanists, it does sound tasty according to the description, so I may give it a shot.

TO me Hyde Park is more sort of sugary than lakeland. I find Peterson's Perfect Plug to have a whisper of that floral sort of essence though.

I just sampled my first Lakeland blend, Ennerdale, a generous gift from Fez. The only thing about it that I liked was the gesture. Smoking potpourri just isn't my thing.

Nate, I admit that some of the lakeland blends can be overwhelming or off-putting for some, kinda like latakia, or perique can be if it is too forward or dominant in a blend, but if it is applied lightly as a condiment, I find it can be refreshing. St. Bruno and Condor (especially Condor) use it masterfully.

I am curious about which blend you tried. Did it have coumarin or tonquin bean topping/casing added? IMO, it is hard to use those types of essences without crossing the line. I didn't care for lakelands for a long time either and I have said as much on several earlier threads.

Condor did it for me, at first I was undecided until I smoked it a second time, then I just found myself enjoying it. I only wish it was available in the US, so now I'm searching for something more readily available in the US that I might like as much. St. Bruno comes close to scratching that itch, but not quite close enough, I still enjoy it though for it's own merits.

Yeah, I agree that Ennerdale isn't the best one to start with, although I did and I liked it a lot at first. Now I am more in line with Markthelad's tastes and I like my Lakeland's light. Condor is a dark, stout flake so the tobacco is anything but light, the floral toppings are light and it adds beautiful nuances to the blend. Revor Plug is one you need to try as well, Nate. It has just the smallest amount of essence added. Revor Plug, Condor and Dark Flake scented are my desert island blends no doubt.
Thanks again, Markthelad, I'll have to do some more research on London Dock.
