Gawith Hoggarth & Co.: Bosun Cut Plug Unscented

I've just smoked the Coniston Cut Plug Unscented (which is also quite scented!), and it was good, but I think clove topping would be even more enjoyable than the floral notes of the Coniston. Thanks for the review--I'm not sure I was aware that there were any Lakelands with clove scent, but I've...

    Three Cheers The Coniston Plug!

I just read in another thread that some of the unscented G,H&Co flakes actually have descriptions that note their flavors. For example Bosun Cut Plug Unscented says: So it appears perhaps it's a topping vs. casing thing? Whatever it is, the Coniston unscented certainly was scented in some form...

    Mc Clellands Grand orientals

My understanding is that a lot of non-Latakia oriental leaf is bought up by cigarette companies. I think Russ or some other blender at a small(er) company mentioned that the vendors for that type of leaf have an enormous minimum requirement for an order, suitable for such cigarette...

    Pipe Smoking Around the World

Very interesting thread! I feel for your gents in more pipe-oppressive parts of the world, though! While we yanks are moaning about FDA regs, you guys have it even worse!

I Smoked My Grandmother's Bathroom Floormat

Sure thing! I wasn't meaning to badmouth the staff of brick and mortars--I'm sure there are many knowledgeable ones out there. But one time as a new smoker I went to a place asking for an English blend, or at least something that had a good bit of Latakia. I'd never tasted Latakia, so when he...

    HH Old Dark Fired

Yes, JimInks and Pipestud are my go-tos on tobaccoreviews.com. Our taste isn't always the same, and they often detect things I don't, but once I got an idea of our relative tastes, it was very easy to get a good idea of whether or not I'd like a blend from their reviews. Also, if you get a...

    HH Old Dark Fired

Bold Kentucky sounds right up my alley! I'll take a look at that too. My wife has weird tastes when it comes to room note. She likes latakia, DFK, even 1792 Flake. But she hates, hates burleys! Go figure.

    HH Old Dark Fired

Hmm, thanks! Well if anyone else has good Dark Fired Kentucky recommendations, feel free to throw them in while we're on that subject, though at the moment ODF will fit the bill quite nicely!

    HH Old Dark Fired

How does this compare to Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky? I used to get the names mixed up when browsing around for blends, but obviously that doesn't mean they are actually similar.

    HH Old Dark Fired

Perique is definitely a variable for different folks. I think of both of those as ground floor level for the heavy nic blends. You have to get up to one of these ground floors to start seeing how blends like Cotton Boll Twist and Dark Flake unscented are so much higher than those ground floor...

C&D Christmas Blend - Corn Cob Pipe

I'd be interested to know this as well. Although I rarely smoke aromatics these days, for some reason the Holidays make me want to, and Holiday Spirit holds a special place in my heart.

    HH Old Dark Fired

Good to see other ODF lovers here. :) Nightcap is a bit weird to me--it's the only tobacco that I've felt is marked wrongly as far as nicotine goes. I think maybe the perique hits people in a weird way and doesn't for me? Nightcap is certainly one of the most robust blends out there for pure...

    HH Old Dark Fired

I recently received this lovely flake from a generous forum member--and better yet, with a few years age on it. Preparation/Tin Note: The bag note is a lovely, leathery, spicy aroma, almost like beef jerky. I just rubbed the flake out--I generally prefer this to cube cut or folding, but I don't...

C&D Christmas Blend - Corn Cob Pipe

Interesting review, I was looking for a good Christmas blend, and it looks like I may need to pick some of this up. Loving the satire in this thread.

I Smoked My Grandmother's Bathroom Floormat

I still think something had to be up with the tobacconist. I've never heard of someone getting Lakeland off of one of their ropes. Sure--I hear it all the time about flakes and other unscented offerings, but they don't even carry Lakeland-scented twists, so a mix up would be difficult. And I've...

    Mc Clellands Grand orientals

I'm eager to work my way through them. I have had Classic Samsun so far. It is a lovely, medium-paced blend as far as nicotine and flavor. I think there are a good number of reviews, but I'd like to work my way through all the Grand Orientals at some point.

    Getting Roped In

There are a lot of cats smoking pipes in this thread. And yes, inhaling would make quite a bit of difference! I've never inhaled pipes or cigars. From what I understand, the nicotine hit is quite a bit different when not inhaling--more relaxing than stimulating.

RO Series Acadian Gold - RussO hits another winner

This sounds like a lovely concept for a blend. I'll have to give it a try, especially if it is your Swan Song of sorts, Russ!

    C&D Byzantium-opinions?

Latakia and orientals... with no VA? Sounds quite interesting. I will have to order some for my dad--he absolutely loves the oriental heavy latakia blends!
