Massacra - A Death Metal Masterpiece

From all the reports, it seems that deathmetal certainly has a knack for these blends.

    Latakia versus Oriental.

I would also recommend the McClelland Grand Orientals line, as most of them do not contain any latakia at all. Since it's a real turn-off for you, you'll want to check beforehand, as one or two do contain latakia. I have the Grand Orientals Drama Reserve, and it's quite pleasant, and contains...

    Adding Cinnamon To A Blend

One note: if you do get some of those Lorann Oils or similarly concentrated blends, be careful not to spill the oil directly on your hands. It will burn like a strong liniment, so best to use gloves while mixing. I think it was mostly the cloves that did this in my blend, and I expect they'll...

    Adding Cinnamon To A Blend

I haven't. I think I'm going to let it sit until Christmas and see what it tastes like. When I was a child, at Christmas my mother used to always help us push clove buds into oranges and leave them in a big wooden bowl to give the house a nice orange/clove Christmas scent. I also love the smell...

Sam Gawith Lakeland Dark (broken flake): Mini Review.

Yes, Jay--I did review the Birdseye. For the record, my 1792 Flake actually burned very well, but I did dry it out quite a bit because I had already read about Gawith's notorious moisture levels. That said, I'm convinced the moisture is some of what makes their blends so flavorful, so I have a...

    Adding Cinnamon To A Blend

I just threw together a homebrew blend last night with cinnamon as one of the players. It sounds like you want a subtle cinnamon taste, so I'd advise just going to the store and picking up some cinnamon oil, a spray bottle, and mixing with Everclear to dilute. It sprays on easily, though I find...

Sam Gawith Lakeland Dark (broken flake): Mini Review.

Great! Thanks for reviewing! I love this type of blend, as I'm a big fan of Gawith (SG and GH) flakes, ropes, and shags due to their strength and depth of flavor. The only thing is that the ropes and flakes are a devil to keep lit! Dark Birdseye has spoiled me. After your review I'll definitely...

Gawith & Hoggarth Dark Flake Scented: A mini review.

DFS is lovely stuff, but some are more sensitive to the Lakeland essence than others. I and the others guys at my pipe club found the Lakeland quite faint on this one. Wait til the Ennerdale arrives, and then you'll see what a STRONG Lakeland is like.

Dark Birdseye and Kendal Kentucky - Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

My mistake; I hadn't experienced the bitter taste and I wasn't sure if the ash could be the cause. I'll have to look out for it next time around. Though I do enjoy reviewing blends, I certainly don't claim to have a very discerning palate! I actually think my taste and smell isn't so sensitive...

Dark Birdseye and Kendal Kentucky - Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

So glad to hear you liked it! I do scoop off the top ash halfway through the bowl, and that might help with bitter taste.

Ah Crap, I Like Mixture 79

This thread convinced me to try Mixture 79--just ordered a pouch. Almost every blend that I've heard people drama-queen over as being terrible has been great to me, so reverse psychology is it. Also hawky and chasingembers like it, and they have good taste.

    Homebrew Blends

These sound like some yummy blends. Interesting reviews as always!

C&D Big and Burley; D&R Picayune

I have had my eyes on Semois for a long time. I've read that lovely New York Times article several times over. I will order soon, and it looks like I'll have to throw in some Old Joe Krantz. Both you and deathmetal have mentioned it a bit I think, and your palates seem similar to my own.

Dark Birdseye and Kendal Kentucky - Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

I quite agree. The black twists (I've only tried the SG XX so far) are a different story, but the brown twists are quite a nice, mild smoke. Perfect for relaxing. The same is true of the Dark Birdseye especially. The black twists are a bit more unique.

Dark Birdseye and Kendal Kentucky - Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

Thanks for the kind words about my reviews. And yes, I would post on TR except my work has a firewall that blocks it as a "mature" site, being about tobacco and all. For some reason most websites on pipes are not blocked, however. Wow at smoking Birdseye in the morning to get your blood going...

Dark Birdseye and Kendal Kentucky - Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

Yes, Hawky--we seem quite on the same path. Kendal Dark was another I had on my list--almost purchased some this go around, but didn't want to lose it in the mix.

Dark Birdseye and Kendal Kentucky - Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

These two Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co. blends are somewhat similar, so I thought it’d be best to review them in tandem. I’m a fan of anything full-bodied with “Gawith” in the name, so it wasn’t long before I got around to trying these blends. Tin Note, Preparation: In the tin (or rather the bag, as...

    Getting Duped - Maybe?

I've never even tasted either, so I was just saying in theory. :) I've always been impressed at how perceptive some of the palates here are. Mine certainly isn't, so I'd be a terrible test subject.

    Getting Duped - Maybe?

If you really want to do a truly discerning test on DNR vs Escudo, you need to send unmarked packages to several smokers who claim they can tell a difference, but not everyone gets both DNR and Escudo. Some get 2 bags of Escudo, some get two DNR, others get one of each. Otherwise it's too easy...

C&D Big and Burley; D&R Picayune

I haven't tried Storm Front, but it looks interesting. Yes, it is certainly still essentially a burley blend--the others are very minimal.
