    Suggestions for English Blends

I know Sutliff has a bunch of "Match" lines in their bulk offerings, including Early Morning and 965.

I Can't Figure Out Dark Fired Tobacco

I really enjoy HH Dark fired. But of all the pipes I’ve tried it in, my MM bent cherry hardwood pipe makes it shine the best. And it’s become the only thing I smoke in it. ??‍♂️

    C&D Ropes and Plugs

The G.L. Pease plugs are definitely more dense than C&D’s cakes. I have to generally sharpen my knife to cut off a decent slice of Jack Knife or Triple Play. But I usually don’t open the tins until they have 2-3 years on them at least. Don’t know if they’re softer when more fresh.

The Importance of Breaking in All the Way Down

I fully fall in the “just load it and smoke it” camp. Works well for me. But I do load to the top and smoke til it goes out towards the bottom. The moisture left mixes with the ash and dottle to leave a thin layer of carbon in the bottom. And I find they smoke pretty sweet after a half dozen...

***What are You Smoking, April 2022?***

I’m case you weren’t aware, Morgan Bones pipes are so affordable, I can’t just buy one at a time. Breaking in this Venice Saddle Bit with some Luxury Bullseye Flake. Coffee, black as the accompaniment.

***What are You Smoking, March 2022?***

First bowl in a new Morgan Bones. I know everyone has their favorites but I like to break in my briar with G.L. Pease’s Barbary Coast.

    What are You Reading Now?

An icon I was very sad to see go.

    Cheap v.s. expensive VA

Part of that is probably because Sutliff is produced in the US but Capstan has to be imported here. That certainly adds extemporaneous costs beyond the costs of production itself. But the question you ask is itself pertinent regardless. Is it worth 4x as much? Well, I've got pounds of the...

    Cheap v.s. expensive VA

Regulations are certainly different everywhere, but there is payed advertising on this website and in other publications here in the US. But you’re not going to see it on TV for certain, nor would it appear in Highlights Magazine. And when I see packaging like C&D’s Folklore, I know that beyond...

***What are You Smoking, March 2022?***

After a brilliant steak dinner with whipped potatoes, broccoli, and toasted ciabatta, I’m finishing with 2020 Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake in a Ropp Heritage. Marshmallows await the coals.

    Cheap v.s. expensive VA

Label design and packaging is 100% part of marketing. And running “tasting notes” videos, plus giving samples to reviewers is also part of marketing and it all costs $$.

    Wedding Cigar Help.

My go to stick is an Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 maduro. The Natural is also excellent. The price to performance ratio is hard to beat IMO.

    Cheap v.s. expensive VA

I don’t know for sure because I too am no expert, but a chunk probably goes to costs like tins, labels, marketing, etc. I also suspect some tinned blends have more age on the tobacco to begin with. I love Sutliff VA Slices. Super affordable straight VA. But it tastes very young at first. Jar it...
