Looking Ahead, Far, and Near - Fred Brown's June 2023 Column is Here!

Very well written and most definitely informative. I get his point on the "then's" versus the "now's" of pipe and tobacco We did live rather spoiled, didn't we?

    Best customer service smokingpipes.com

Smokingpipe is one of my preferred vendors both pipes and definitely tobaccos. Class operation. I've had one minor issue with a banged-up tin of a hard-to-get SG blend, and they credited the whole purchase and let me keep the tin. More than I expected.

    Palate Crosstraining

Not one to follow seasonal choices. I smoke all genres and whatever sounds good at the moment I smoke. The only exception is EVERY morning starts with three bowls of Latakia-based blends, that is my daily ritual that is not subject to change.

Carter Hall is a classic of old as is Prince Albert. There are some subtle changes in the nuancing of flavors/accenting with the new manufacturer but still a standard IMO. Good time codgers that grandpa smoked and eventually stirred my piping soul as well.

    Beginner Blend Progression

Looking back perhaps a light English or mild Burley, maybe even a simple Dutch Cavendish style blend. Of course, many moons ago I went right into dime store aromatics and then into Virginia which was probably not the best course looking back.

Missouri Meerschaum; Year 2000 Price List

A MM Legend priced at $3.59 back in 2000 should cost @ $ 6.32 just based upon the current value of a dollar/inflationary factors. Most are selling them for around +$8 now, so maybe a little more margin has been added since 2000. Yet all direct costs of manufacturing are WAY up since Covid. Could...

    Oriental Blend Recommendation

Oriental Silk is definitely a good one. You might find Low Country's version of VA/Turkish pleasing as well and it is very affordable. Personally, EOS as mentioned, and Wilke's 111 is a really nice Oriental forward blend.

War Horse Bar is a winner!

I have put both this and its brother on the active got-get list after hearing Russ O talk about it on a recent YouTube video. He claims that it is strong and generally Russ is fairly knowledgeable dude. Given that he concocted it from the Irish original its highly probable that it is good. And I...

I Finally Tried Some Lane 1Q.

I too recently stumbled, unknowingly, into smoking 1Q again despite my intention not to partake it again. Frankly I had reviewed that blend and found it to be average in all performance measures while lacking any personal appeal to me, However, this latest experience moved my opinion forward as...

This Tobacco is Crap! No it Isn't! New G.L. Pease Article

A well written piece and his thoughtful argument is justly supported. For myself, I assess blends based upon a standardized system that I have defined with the true intent of forming an objective assessment. Of course, there is some subjectivity that comes into play based upon personal...

    Old dog

Yes, speak and you shall see the light! One of the best things ever created was precious Latakia. What's not to like I wonder. I started with your cheapo aromatics like many and then I found PS English Oriental Supreme on a fluke purchase. Never looked back. Although I do enjoy all genres my...

What Kind of Pipes do you Like and Why?

Brand wise I prefer Savinelli, not an artisan guy at all, too cheap and would rather spend the money on tobaccos. I do enjoy my too many cobs as well. Shape wise on briars Canadians, Pots, 320 Author and big Tomatoes.

Who Taught You to Smoke a Pipe?

I grew up watching my grandfathers with a young boy's interest in their rituals, smoking their PA and SWR codger blends. I first tried at the age of 19 myself using my grandpa Mitchell's Grabow. Both had already passed on of course. Through trial and error in those early years with many a...

    Hello From Central Texas

Welcome from the Buckeye State, said the Boilermarker. If you like Old Toby then I do suggest grab some of the Squire's Cordial Friends around Xmas time. Perhaps their second best aromatic IMO. Rivendell is quite tasty as well; I agree with you.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

Closing Saturday evening down with Fire Storm in a fire red cob. Dang, Russ O has a talent for concocting tasty Vapers. Fly out early tomorrow to LA. If anyone knows of a good pipe shop in the Santa Ana area, please pass that along would you. Thanks!
