Throwing Water into the Air at -52 ?

I used to do that off my apartment balcony when I lived in Minnesota. Once the air temp got below -15 f or so, a cup of boiling water was guaranteed to freeze into a snow/ice mixture before it hit the ground. Cool! Then I moved to Arizona, where I was able to make hot tea outside during the...

    James Upshall

I've got a Tilshead (Upshall second) that smokes beautifully and does not look in any way like a second. And I bought it from a forum member for a song. A little while back someone on here was unloading a substantial collection of Upshalls. If you stick around and pay attention to the...

Anyone Heard of this Texas Bourbon?

Yep. From your Wiki article: "On May 4, 1964, the United States Congress recognized bourbon whiskey as a "distinctive product of the United States" by concurrent resolution. Bourbon may be produced anywhere in the United States where it is legal to distill spirits, but most brands are...

Anyone Heard of this Texas Bourbon?

That’s a common myth. It does have to be from the US though. And it has to contain at least 51 percent corn. There are other requirements as well: http://bourbonbuzz.com/bourbon-requirements/

    Your Cellar Size

Much of my cellar is still in storage since a recent move (still looking for a house to buy) but I'd guess it's 25-30 lbs. My primary goals are: 1. To get to the point where I have a good supply of well-aged blends, especially the Va/VaPers I like to smoke. 2. To squirrel away a decent...

Superbowl: What will You Smoke and Drink?

It’s well worth seeking out. If you can find multiple single barrels pick them up. I live 10 minutes from the distillery and I love going there to drink a flight or two of different barrels. The differences can be remarkable! Good stuff!

Superbowl: What will You Smoke and Drink?

I’ll be making wings and dip, my wife will be making jalapeño poppers, and we’ll be drinking some local Cincy brews and New Riff Old Fashioneds. After the game, to celebrate the Bengals win, I’ll be having a bowl of 8 yr old SJF in a Castello lovat. Go Bengals! Who dey!

What Tobaccos Hit You from Out of Left Field?

There have been a few tobaccos over the years that have opened up new flavor profiles to me, and made me dive down some deep rabbit holes into specific types of blends. A couple of note: Match Victoria, the blend that made me "get" VaPers. Now I smoke Va based blends 80 percent of the time...

Best Beverage Ever For Pipe Smoking

This is the correct answer. I usually have my coffee with a bit of cream, but when I’m having a pipe at the same time, black all the way. I find the two really enhance each other.

Amateur Astronomy and the Pipe Smoker

I've been into amateur astronomy since I was a kid, and as an adult, I find that it matches well with pipe smoking. I used to have an 18" Dob with setting circles and tracking homebuilt by a master craftsman, as well as a 10" Dob that was my first scope, and two 80mm refractors (one a triplet...

    Your Favorite Match Blend

Elizabethan (Match Victoria), MM 965, and Balkan Supreme are three of the best values in pipe tobacco, bar none. I'd venture to say that Match Victoria is easily better than the current iteration of Dunhill/Peterson Elizabethan.

Cringle Flake 2021 Up At SPC

Yep. Midnight release helps. If it's anything like last year, it'll be mostly gone by noon.

Cringle Flake 2021 Up At SPC

It's also up at TP.com. Picked up my 10 tins. Looking forward to this one. First special release I've picked up in at least 6 months.

    Stephen Sondheim

Truly one of the great artists in the history of the United States. His work was broad and deep. He is one of the few composers of musical theatre that I could never get enough of. May he RIP.

***What Are You Smoking, November 2021?***

Currently enjoying (very much, I might add) some GL Pease Fillmore from 2009 in a Mastro Gepetto 214 bent Dublin. It's an unseasonably warm evening in Cincinnati, with a current temp of 64 at 11:45 PM, although that's about to change with a front coming through tonight. This Fillmore, and the...

    Lease vs rent a pipe

This used to be the case in the taverns of Europe back in the 1700s. Clay pipes would hang from the ceiling, and if you wanted a bowl you would buy the tobacco and “rent” the pipe from the establishment. I don’t think these were Dunhills and Castello tho.

***What Are You Smoking, October 2021?***

Enjoying a bowl of GL Pease Fillmore from 2008 in a Stanwell Bamboo freehand bent Dublin (my first pipe!). Having a spot of Weller SR on the side.

    First Tobacco You Bought?

It was some goopy aromatic. However, the first one I bought and enjoyed was McClelland Classic Samsun

What's the worst blend you've tried?

Old Joe Kranz. I know it’s beloved by many, but I’ve tried it twice now and I think it tastes like dry moldy socks. I think it’s the combo of the burley and the Perique, as I like a Perique heavy VaPer and I enjoy a number of Burley blends, but the combination of the two doesn’t do it for me at...

Jim's Carolina Red Flake With Perique 2021 Review.

Well this did nothing to dissuade me from plunking down for a few tins. Nice write up, @jiminks!
