    The Value of Handling Tobacco?

One of the professors I respected most kept his graduate students grounded by frequently reminding them that a PhD is far more a measure of perseverance than intelligence. As for the species as a whole, my optimistic days are few and far between. But, hey, if more people spent time handling...

    The Value of Handling Tobacco?

Most of the leaf I jar arrives in plastic trays or bags, so a little more contact with plastic probably does not matter. I don’t mean to pick a fight over any of this, so I should better explain myself. I do think Gardner’s work is at base unscientific, and it was aimed by him at the field of...

GH&Co Brown Irish #4 Rope --- Love the New Package Method/Coil Size

That’s a shame. It was the Camels what did in my relatives. The other pipe smoker in my family lived to a ripe old age and died peacefully, napping in his favorite chair after Sunday lunch.

    From Chantilly, VA

Welcome from Missouri’s Platte Purchase region, because obviously there wasn’t enough Missouri from the start.

    The Value of Handling Tobacco?

I do usually wear at least the Sam’s brand food service gloves when jarring bulk tobacco. My hands are probably cleaner than a field, but I don’t want to allow too many extra variables in the mix when setting aside good leaf for the long term.

    The Value of Handling Tobacco?

I do not endorse Gardner (his work seems to be in the same relegated category as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs at this point), but muscle memory and the unsung metis lauded by James C. Scott jibe with my experience as a pipe smoker. Just keep tinkering with your process as you smoke in a wide...

    HU Tobacco In The US?

Agreed. Some blends look good, but not good enough for me to elbow my way into the vanguard. If K&K prove to have returned to previous quality standards, I may give a couple of them a try. @JimInks review of Director’s Cut indicates K&K do have some fence mending to do.

BBB Silver Grain - Stem not flush

It is non-invasive and needs doing anyway, but George’s advice is ultimately what you need to do. I have seen that ring of raised wood on a pipe that probably sat unused for decades. Everclear won’t remove the wood (thank goodness).

BBB Silver Grain - Stem not flush

Never mind - @georged was faster on the draw and a surer shot.

BBB Silver Grain - Stem not flush

Have you scrubbed out the mortise with Everclear and Q-tips? Gunk can be stubborn and its thickness hard to judge. When I have had a pipe with a similar problem, gunk has usually been the culprit.

    Spotting Replacement Dunhill Stems (pre-1970)

When I was a fresh initiate to the hobby I had a similarly bad experience. Unfortunately, I paid for a hand cut stem that turned out worse, or at least no better, than a pre-molded one. On the bright side, the pipe is an army mount, so there is an easier path to redeeming the pipe.

    Spotting Replacement Dunhill Stems (pre-1970)

Thanks! The strangeness of the tenon face and the even stranger appearance of the tenon-shank face transition were such niggling things in part because the button looked so spot-on. Unfortunately, the best non-fishtail stem I have for reference is a rough horn version from later in the war...

    My 1st Falcon

I don’t have much to add to the cleaning advice, but never forget this: the stem is not removable. I do use the pipe cleaner rings, but I make my own. I typically also drop some Nording Keystones into the bowl’s “hole” to keep ash or finer tobacco from clogging up the space between the bottom...

@georged, sorry, I meant to (rather self-servingly) tag you on the new photos.

    Spotting Replacement Dunhill Stems (pre-1970)

Here are some better photos with less grime. The shank face under the gunk is smooth. The tenon still looks off, and the transition, while correct in shape, looks and feels strange. The feel has give to it, and the discoloration is strange. In the final photos there is a spot that looks like...

    Burley Highest TSNA Concentrations

As a former dipper, I am familiar with nitrosamines in terms of discussions purely about cancer risk. American mouth tobaccos are notoriously high in TSNAs. I switched to Swedish snus mainly for that reason. It could also be had in very potent varieties. I am not sure how TSNAs would be a...

    Spotting Replacement Dunhill Stems (pre-1970)

Dang, you didn’t need a better photo after all. I wasn’t even registering the stem face. I fixed onto the face of the tenon. The rest of it looked right, from the shape, to the proportions, on down to the button. I don’t think it can be chalked up to wartime production, either. I’ll still...

    Danish Sir Walter Raleigh

IF STG leaves Sutliff alone, you can get the best of the best codger blends: Watch City American Cut Plug. It isn’t cheap, but it is fantastically good. There are also the C&D burleys. I stay away from the marque’s mold-prone blends, but their burleys seem to keep.
