    Cutty Madness. Match 6.

I notice a close vote between these two. I guess that's why there are horse races. I'm not a fan of bamboo, and I could wish number 1 had a darker stain, but the stem work looks stellar, so #1 for me.

    Cutty Madness. Match 5.

Thanks for sharing this very interesting project. Number 2 is my choice here. It's a classy looking, well-proportioned pipe and I like the smooth top on the bowl. Number 1 is a little to "out there" for my taste.

What is Your Fondest Memory Related to Pipe Smoking?

Fathers Day a few years ago. My present from my wife, kids and their spouses was to wash and wax my car. I got to sit in my easy chair and puff while reading the Sunday paper. I felt very spoiled!

    Reading and Smoking......[chooching?]

I'll probably be re-reading Patrick Obrian's "Aubrey/Maturin" series. Most recently though, I've been wading through "Albion's Seed", a very dry, but well researched look at British colonization of America.

    Cutty Madness. Match 4.

Number 2. I'm not sure I would go for such a small piece, but the blast is nice, and it has a classic shape that's appealing.

    Cutty Madness. Match 3.

Number 1 for me. I really don't care for spigots generally but I do like the amber look of the stem. On the other hand, I don't like bamboo at all!

    Inflation.

I'm sure dividends will be paid, and a lot of stock will be bought back. Not sure about the new fields, given how many leases are currently going unused. Also I understand the British are trying to figure out how they avoided a windfall profit tax.

    Inflation.

In the last quarter of 2022, about 2/3 of their revenue came from their gas division. In that time only about 14% of their capital spending was in renewables. Collectively, the 7 largest oil companies made over $150 billion in profit in just the first three quarters.

Shell reported today, their largest profit in 115 years.

I am so happy for you! That is great to see, stay strong!

    Inflation.

My daughter and her husband raised ducks on their farm for egg production. Their birds were pasture raised and given the type of care you give to your pets. Then they were hit with the bird flu. They dutifully reported their sick birds to the state and, due to weather delays in getting the test...

    Cutty Madness. Match 2.

Neither really races my motor, but number 2 is the better choice.

    Cutty Madness. Match 1.

Definitely the first one. The blast is wonderfully textured and the stem is an organic extension of the pipe that is elegant and attractive. I'm afraid the pencil shank version looks awkward and ill-proportioned. Also, the semi-plateau top is unfinished in appearance.

School me on Hand Cut Stems

I have only had a couple of pipes that had stems I found absolutely uncomfortable. One was a Charatan with a DC bit, and the other was an Armellini. I sold the Charatan and even had the Armellini reshaped with a thinner button by a noted pipe maker. I still didn't care for how that pipe smoked...

    Pipe Myths

I've never heard of clay pipes being thrown away after a single use. These were fragile items and easily broken. I believe that's when they might be discarded. Yes, they were cheap, shipped in barrels and packed in straw, but I've never heard of them being prefilled and I doubt that's practical.

    Squadron Leader Vs Skiff Mixture

I prefer SL with at least three years of ageing, and I find the Oriental balance in Skiff to be a little harsh. Commonwealth is the "Lat Bomb" of the line it is 50% Latakia.

    Refinishing a Kaywoodie

That certainly looks like an unsmoked pipe with a pre-carbonized bowl. The finish may just have been damaged by rattling around in a drawer or something, but I don't care for varnish on a pipe anyway. If you strip it, you may find a lot of fills. If that's going to bother you, consider a dark...

    Bending Vulcanite?

I have reshaped stems with a pipe cleaner inserted by resting them on a tray with a bed of sand or rock salt and placing them in a 200 degree (F) oven for a minute or two. Remove the stem with oven mitts and bend a little more than desired, as it will tend to relax some after cooling.

    A Bar Exam for Pipesmokers

You are alone in an airplane at 12,000 feet. You are 2 hours from the nearest airport. You have one hour of fuel remaining. On board are 100 gallons of crude oil and sufficient vessels and piping to build a catalytic cracking system. Do you; A; Build the reactor vessel first B; Build the...

    Open McClelland Question

McClelland made a wide variety of blends including quite a few made for other brands. The majority of their tobaccos were of very high quality, some were the equal of any blends available. Their leaving the market is a great loss to pipe smokers everywhere.
