An Article in Favor of Pipes and Cigars

I agree that some alone time for introspection and relaxation is advisable and pleasant, but I disagree with excluding the pipe from that opportunity. To me, the pipe is not a hobby. It is simply something I do and it doesn't distract from that personal time. I can smoke my pipe every day...

    Favorite Historical Fiction?

The Compleat Enchanter and Lest Darkness Fall are wonderful, fun books. More fantasy than historical fiction though.

    Pocket Cameras

Great pictures. I carried an Olympus XA for many years when I traveled for business. Whenever I got a chance to slip away, I would turn a work trip into a photo expedition.

Hang on, your F3 lives in a pocket? That must be a big pocket!

    How Out of Round?

I would pass on this, especially with the lack of communication. I once bought a pipe with slight but noticeable out of round condition and sent it to Walker pipe repair for what was called a "re-rounding". Not sure how that was accomplished as the pipe came back looking perfect with no sign...

Time to Taste the Benefits of Cellaring?

I have experienced this often enough that I am convinced there is a genuine change after opening a tin. The longer a tin has aged, the more noticeable the effect. It seems that two or three days after opening, the flavor improves markedly. I describe this as the tobacco "breathing" just as a...

    Cutty Madness. Championship Match.

#1, though I was hoping for a different finalist.

    Cutty Madness. Semifinals Match 2.

This one is tough as I really like both. The rugged texture of the blast works for me so I'll say #1 again.

    Cutty Madness. Semifinals Match 1.

    #1

    Cutty Madness Quarterfinals. Match 1.

I vote for number 1. This may be my choice for the best of all of them. While the non-removable stem may be less practical, it is an attractive touch and the paneled shape with a foot and the wonderful blast are intriguing.

    Show Off Your Naval Treen.

I recall Dunhill selling a Trafalgar set which included a tamper made from teakwood from HMS Victory. I'd love to be able to own one of those.

    Welcome from Washington state.

    Cutty Madness. Match 8.

#1, but neither really appeals. I don't care for the urn shape of #2 and the bowl of #1 looks out of proportion to the pencil shank.

    Cutty Madness. Match 7.

Number 1. A little short, but nice stem work.

    Birth Year Pipe

I checked with Marty Pulver who had a 1949 Dunhill shell listed as pending and asked him to contact me if the deal fell thru. He happened to have another he hadn't posted yet, so that's how I got mine.

    Birth Year Pipe

1968 uneventful? Wars, riots, assassinations, elections? Yeah, nothing much.
