Should I Be Concerned About This Draft Hole?

Was this a new, unused pipe from a store? Was it previously owned? I wonder if someone opened up the hole to make it bigger or if it came from the factory like this? How is the draw when assembled?

    Plaka Olive Wood

I only have one pipe made from olive. I believe it only has a wax coating. The heat from smoking will darken the wood over time. You might enjoy seeing that gradual transformation. If you oil the pipe, it will likely darken the wood and mask what you might see if you just smoke it.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Happy Birthday! Good luck on your doctor visit.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Having some Esoterica Tobacciana Scarborough (2016) in a Savinelli Autograph 000 E with fluted bowl and rounded hexagonal shank and swirled yellow acrylic stem—I believe this designation stands for “000 Eccezionale” to represent a higher grade than the Autograph 000 and comes after the handful...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Having Hearth & Home 10th Anniversary White Knight Marquee Series in a Savinelli La Milano 1004 Billiard with a very fine Corallo-like finish. The La Milano line is circa 1949–1950 and is a precursor to the more ubiquitous de luxe Milano, and even has the same brass bar on the stem. However, it...

Coffee Roasting At Home: Advice Please!

I agree with consuming the coffee about three to five days after roasting; the beans need to degas the carbon dioxide. It can be interesting to consume it earlier, over a week’s time, just to experience the difference days can make in how it tastes. With the Behmor, I usually roasted eight...

Coffee Roasting At Home: Advice Please!

I have an iRoast as well, but the cooling leaves much to be desired. You will end up baking your beans and have a flat flavour. The Behmor can handle one pound at a time, but I recommend only doing eight ounces or less because of cooling.

Coffee Roasting At Home: Advice Please!

@Servant King I highly recommend the Behmor for indoor roasting; it has a catalytic converter that minimizes smoke. I haven’t roasted in awhile, but the Behmor will do City+ like a champ. I usually have the beans go into second crack and start cooling then. Always monitor a roast and never...

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

Having a mystery cigar. It’s 6.0" x 48 or 50, so it may be too short to be a Cigars International Cohiba Knock-off, which I think is closer to 6.5". It was very hot this afternoon, so we stayed inside. It’s 78⁰ now, but with a nice breeze. Some kids that the neighbour across the way...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Going to have Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake in a British Gold Falcon with a 50mm Smooth Briar Chimney Stack while I work on a PowerPoint slideshow presentation for a talk I’m giving on Friday, June 7th at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. I’ll be talking about my career colliding with my...

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

I like the Bahia Maduro. It has a pungent aroma—you can detect a hint of ammonia if your nose is right by the smoke. In terms of flavour, there’s a sweetness, a hint of cedar woodiness (mixed with unsweetened cocoa). It’s not a complex smoke, but twenty sticks of this size and gauge for under...

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

Now having a Bahia Maduro Corona Gigante/Churchill (7.0" x 54) on the porch. Wasabi is happy to be outside. Earlier, I clipped some maple saplings that were growing by a bush where several birdies hang out next to the house. It’s 82⁰ and I’m sweating just sitting here with my cigar and tea...

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

Finishing up a night smoke on the porch. It’s cool and pleasant out. Did a little light weeding. Figured I’d better do a little maintenance on the ashtray and clear out the dead soldiers. I’ll probably bag this up for pipe mud for the cobs.

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

Having a Double Happiness Cazadores, 6.0" x 50 (from the Philippines) on the porch. Chatting with our neighbour, Terry. For a cheap, short filler cigar, these are tastier than one would expect.

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

I took advantage of the 20% sale at Smoking Pipes and finally ordered a box of Trinidad Espiritu Series No. 2 cigars. As I’ve previously mentioned, out of the 2022 sixty-five CIGARfest sampler (which I enjoyed), there was only one cigar I found truly exceptional. Having a Trinidad Espiritu...

Are Smoking Pipe Advertisements Legal in the US?

I wonder if you contact a company like Laudisi (they own smokingpipes.com and Peterson pipes), if you might be able to speak to someone who handles advertising. They might be able to tell you where they are able to place ads and steer you in the right direction.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

When I was in college, there was a very talented writer in my Advanced Creative Writing class named Ivy. Her father was the character actor, Michael Vale, who played “Fred the Baker” (the Dunkin’ Donuts guy who used to say that line).

    Morta Pipes Experiences?

I have a pipe from a Vietnamese carver with interchangeable bowls—unfortunately, the Morta one cracked on the second use. Getting a replacement isn’t an option, so I’ll be patching it with refractory cement. It makes me a bit gun shy on pulling the trigger on another pipe made with Morta.
