***What Are You Smoking, June 2024?***

Is that a songbird in the background? What kind of bird is it?

***What Are You Smoking, June 2024?***

Going to have Dan Tobacco Devil’s Holiday in a Sunday Cob Pipes (of Washington, Missouri) Stacked Dublin Churchwarden out on the porch. I don’t smoke most of my pipes outside, unless they’re cobs—I don’t worry about dropping cobs as much as my other pipes (even though this one, given its age...

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

An electrician was supposed to come by to go over an upcoming job with us, but some sort of emergency service call came up. So, we’re going to relax on the porch now that he’s probably not coming today. Having a La Gloria Cubana Serie R Esteli No. 50 (7" x 50). It’s 78⁰ out. It’s a bit overcast...

What is this Savinelli Model ?

It is an oddity, to be sure. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the “Savinelli 1876” stamp on a shank before. I’ve also never seen an outlined “S” in a shield on a stamp for the stem or wood. But, those are the reasons this pipe appeals to me—because I haven’t seen them before. Just because I haven’t...

What is this Savinelli Model ?

I doubt someone spent the money to have dies made to stamp this pipe. It’s probably a legit Savinelli—the stamp with the date is unusual to see (and very cool!) The shop opened in 1876 and is considered the founding date of the company, so I don’t think it’s out of place to have such a...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2024?***

Getting ready to watch UFC 302, Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier for the Lightweight Championship. Having Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding Special Reserve in a Briar, Sweat, and Tears (BST) Large Curve (LC) Swan Neck 3/4 Bent Billiard.

The Advantages of "Too Many" Pipes (Or "Too Few")

One more and you have two seven day sets. I must ponder this.

What is this Savinelli Model ?

Given the stout proportions and the short distance between the rim and top part of the shank, I’m guessing this is a 613. What I find most fascinating are the stamps: the arched logo with date and the oversized shield stamps on the shank and stem.

I suspect the correct single oval required to match each of the curves of that horn pipe would’ve made the image impractically large for a compact diagram; I can forgive his use of multiple ovals in this instance—his point still comes across as intended, if not exactly literal.

I will add that @georged offered constructive criticism, something that any artist willing to learn should welcome.

If what you made makes you happy and the pipe is how you wanted it to be, that’s great and I’m glad for you. Just about everything in life is subjective, so all of these exchanges only matter if one makes them matter. My comment about looking “right” are based on my view—my subjective view—which...

@jbfrady The pipe is interesting and has fun ideas going on. As an artist, I can relate to the idea of not finding the exercise of copying something appealing; I, too, fell prey to the rebelliousness of youth when I was in art school. Did I copy a Rembrandt? Not really. I came up with a...

What Are You Drinking? June 2024

Having some black tea while I have Amphora Kentucky Blend in an Amphora Stack (from @Humblepipe ) while watching His Dark Materials.

What Cigar are You Smoking? 2024

Having a Padron 3000 Maduro, 5.5" x 52 on the porch. It’s 72⁰, sunny, and breezy. Wasabi is soaking some rays. The sun feels hot and the sky is blue. It’s beautiful out.

Should I Be Concerned About This Draft Hole?

I guess this will come down to what you’re willing to live with. I have a pipe or two with drilling that’s waaay off, but smoke fine. As long as the draw is good, there may be no problem in terms of smoking. If passing a pipe cleaner is of paramount importance, maybe this could be an issue. If...

    Painted Briar Options?

Have you considered THE SMOKE? It’s a phenolic resin pipe (like The Pipe) with a pyrolytic graphite sleeve (sort of like a Meerschaum lined briar, except this is a graphite lined plastic pipe with a nylon stem). You can find them for under twenty bucks on eBay, It has a painted finish and would...
