Plaka Olive Wood

Just returned from Athens Greece and brought back a nice little Olive Wood pipe I purchased from a shop in the Plaka in Athens. It hasn't been oiled or stained. I'm thinking of rubbing it with a few coats of Butcher Block oil before putting it to use. Am I on the right track here? I'll post pictures when I get home. Currently sitting in Logan Airport waiting out a 7.5 hour layover.

That is scary. I was going to mention an Olive wood pipe for my friend and I in Malta a few years ago. Would Olive wood be considered poor quality ? I don`t use mine often but I kind of liked it.

Not at all.
It should last as long as your briars if looked after.

nope just different. More prone to cracking and breaking but there is a reason "briar" is the most common pipe wood.

love how much the grain almost more reminds me of something like the material you have the pipe sitting on. In fact I love the contrast and illusion of depth in the olive wood pipes I have seen. Biggest problem I have with the material is less choice because fewer pipes are made of it.

I only have one pipe made from olive. I believe it only has a wax coating. The heat from smoking will darken the wood over time. You might enjoy seeing that gradual transformation. If you oil the pipe, it will likely darken the wood and mask what you might see if you just smoke it.

Took a look at the ingredients in my cutting board conditioner. Food Grade Mineral Oil, Bee's Wax, and Carnauba Wax. I gave the pipe three liberal coats with a dwell time of 1 hour in between the first two and over night for the last one taking care not to get any in the bowl. I buffed it with an old tee shirt scrap and it looks great. Today I loaded a bowl of Scotty's Salmon River and it was a very nice first experience with the pipe. It's only sure to get better over time.
