    New York CIty

Is there no longer a Dunhill store in NYC? I used to go in there quite often, upsatirs in the back they actually sold cigars and pipes!

    Parker vs Dunhill?

I have a bunch of Hardcastles from the 1950's I got NIB about 15 years ago, I think from a shop in Tennessee. They are very well made pipes, nothing like the Hardcastles of the 1970's onward. I have no trouble believing they could have been Dunhill seconds. On some I could find no pits or fills...

    Favorite pipe shape ?

Cherrywood or Bent Poker, it's the shape I saw at a friends house that started me on collecting pipes. He had come from a garage sale with a long double sided 24 pipe rack. Most were common, a couple of Savinellis, but there was a Dunhill 20 Cherrywood that caught my eye.

Looking for a good tobacco for when I fish, suggestion?

A full bent or an Oom Paul are much easier to hold in the mouth while flyfishing, lower center of gravity. I have a couple of full bents with wind caps.

I have a question for everybody. Please answer

I seem to remember in a discussion several years ago that a pipe smoker who worked for an insurance company found out that the actuarial tables showed pipe smokers to live longer than non-smokers. We figured it was due to stress reduction if it was true...

Ned help finding a football shaped pipe

There are lots of old folding pipes that are in the general shape of an oval, that one looks as though someone started with one of those and got a whittlin'...

    Meerschaum pipes

And meerschaum is not a clay but rather a mineral. The name is German for "sea foam" and as I recall the deposits are sometimes found floating on the top of the water but most is mined by hand. It's about the hardness of hard Swiss cheese when fresh, this is when and why it can be intricately...

    Meerschaum pipes

They also absorb moisture much better than wood pipes and dry out faster. They can be smoked daily and would be a perfect pipe if they weren't so fragile.

    Nording Pipes???

Jeees Andy, sure wish I could duck hunt in short sleeves! that was a kayak trip in the Adirondacks...hope to see you in a few weeks.

    Meerschaum pipes

As Dan said, make sure it's block meerschaum, the pressed meerschaums do not smoke or color nearly as well. Here's an old cheroot holder I got at auction, hard to believe it started out white!

    Nording Pipes???

I have several older Nordings, including his Hunting Pipe collection and they are very good smokes, all. I would look for one of the higher grade ones or perhaps and estate pipe, they seem to a bit better engineered than some of the lower grades.

Churchwardens... Awesome? Or Too Silly for Public?

I have a nice collection of CW's, some very old Dunhill's, some Dunhills from the 90's and other English makers. I also one made or me by my friend Rolando Negoita, another from Joe Skoda, both members of the Hudson Valley club. They are great, cool smokes, relaxing when sitting and reading...

    Kaywoodie pipe smoking contest?

This event grew as an offshoot of the Xmas meeting of the Hudson Valley Pipe Club. That club didn't have a president, rather we called the position "Diictator", it made decision making much easier. I was honored to be Dictator of the HVPC for a few years, I was Rob II, Rob Denholz was Rob I, and...

    Tobacco Hoarding

I have a few hundred tins, about a hundred sealed packets and lots of bulk. Most if it was acquired over 10 years ago when tobacco acquisition began to get dicey. I also did some part time work at a store that was cleaning out bulks and old dented tins at cheap cheap cheap. Most of the tins are...

    Connoisseur Pipes - Ed Burak

As the OP can probably attest to, Ed never made many of his own pipes, he was the designer but the pipes were actually made by a gentleman from NJ. Rob, I just found a bunch of Scottish ribbon and Turkish Black in my cellar! Rob I

    Pipe tobacco and cancer

I haven't smoked much for a couple of years due to a dry eye problem. My ophthalmologist suggested spending less time in smoky environs and it seemed to have helped. I miss it though and plan on lighting up a bowl tonight. However, my GF starts chemo on Thursday, she just got through with breast...
