Newer Pipe Smoker Wants Thick Clouds

That’s actually a thing already! Spoiler: they suck compared to an actual pipe.

    Your Cellar Size

I think I have maybe 20 pounds or so in total. At a couple bowls a day, I’m not smoking it fast enough to worry about running out, and I feel like stocking up on more bulk blends would be kind of gratuitous at this point anyway. I’m gonna smoke what I got, and if I run out and tobacco’s been...

How Long Should a Pipeful Last?

I smoke 1-2 bowls a day, usually. Weather permitting, my morning pipe is either a Briarworks C151XL or a Moonshine Cannonball with my own “trash blend” that’s basically a little bit of everything, and it’ll last roughly an hour or so. If I have another later in the day, it’s in a smaller pipe...

    Pre Packing Pipe

I pretty much do it right after smoking, every single time, and I haven't really run into any issues with stems getting too loose or whatever. The one pipe I had with a loose stem came like that from the factory, and that's easily sorted by dampening the mortise with a drop or two of water, or...

    Thoughts on Smoking Indoors

I prefer to smoke outside. I like having a view along with my coffee and pipe, and it feels…more like an event or ceremony rather than just something mundane to take for granted.

    Preferred Lighter

I’m not particularly picky. For pipes, I have a Kiribi Mikazuki, a Xikar Resource 2, a Lotus something or other, and use whichever one of them whenever. I also have a pipe Zippo, but haven’t bothered with it yet. My non-pipe Zippos have butane single jet torch inserts, plus I have one of those...

    Pre Packing Pipe

Kinda, but if you clean the pipe after every smoke, give it a bit of time to breathe and dry out, it’ll be fine in a baggie or pipe pouch. If you put it away wet and dirty and seal it up in a baggie, there’s a higher likelihood of the pipe souring and seasoning everything with that moist, stale...

    Torch Lighter and Pipes

Ouch! What pipe is that? I love the proportions and shape.

    Torch Lighter and Pipes

I use torch lighters, but only with cigars or rollies. I can’t get behind the idea of using one to light a pipe and prefer a much softer flame for that.

    Pre Packing Pipe

That’s why I like Australian pipes. The upside down chamber cancels that phenomenon out.

    5 Pieces of Advice

-All tobaccos have a sweet spot where they’re not too moist or too dry. It’s worth taking the time to find it…and when in doubt, lean towards the drier side. -Pack lighter than you think you need to -Sip, don’t rip. You also don’t need to smoke all the way down to the bottom on a single light...

    My no-relight technique

…Paint? In the chamber? No proper pipe has paint in the chamber. If that’s a common problem for you, maybe look into other vendors besides AliExpress for pipes? That aside, I’ve never really had relighting issues. Drying the tobacco a bit and avoiding overpacking the bowl does the trick for me.

    Prince Albert

I never pass up a chance to have coffee with royalty, so PA is a permanent fixture in my tobacco cellar.

    B&M Etiquette

Well, I have a tupperdor with somewhere around 75 cigars in it because I wanted to support the local cigar shop after they went to the trouble of ordering some pipe tobaccos for me. Pipe tobacco had a 95% wholesale tax on it, so they made very little off pipe smokers. Cigars were around 35%, on...

Don't Want to Spend a Lot on a Rack

I never saw a rack I liked, so I just get those little leather pipe couch dealies instead. I did treat myself a couple months ago to a bookshelf just for my pipes and tobaccos, then wired it with LED lighting strips.

School me on Easy Tobacco Growing

I happen to know exactly how lazy people can grow tobacco. For this, I use the most fearsome agricultural weapon in my arsenal, which I carry in my back right pocket at all times. Through the mighty and barely restrained arcane powers of my wallet, my friends John Middleton and Peter Stokkebye...

    It Stinks To Be Here

The cow patties on the other side of the fence always look fresher, but they're still cow patties.

    Tobacco--How Much Do You Carry?

I smoke mostly at home, but if a rare opportunity to smoke elsewhere comes up, I take however much tobacco fits in the tobacco compartment of my pipe pouch. Maybe an ounce and a half or so?

Thoughts On Frugality and the Pipe.

That was a fun read! I went bananas when I first started, buying 40-something pipes and trying a whole bunch of tobaccos, but in the end, discovered that I'm not really a pipe collector or a tobacco conoisseur at heart. I like Prince Albert and Peter Stokkebye Norwegian Blend, and these two...

I do not get satisfied from pipe like cigar

Pipes are pipes, and cigars are cigars. If one works for you and the other doesn't, stick with the thing that works.
