Next Flake To Try: Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug

Just to clarify, it's not Harris that bites me (!). I should have said that red forward blends do not bite me as bad as they seem to bite Harris.

Next Flake To Try: Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug

Hi pitchfork. I like McClelland's stuff. But I find that red forward blends tend to bite me (not as bad as Harris, perhaps, but there is often some discomfort). Rattray's blends are more tolerable for me on this score. But (for example) Blackwood's Flake can really torch my tongue if I'm not...

Next Flake To Try: Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug

Still on a quest for that minimally hay-like, non-aro Virginia flake that will satisfy my sweet tooth. Just ordered some Cut Virginia Plug, and we'll see how it compares to Dunhill Flake, Capstan Blue, and Klondike Gold (a current favorite). Thanks for the recommendations, all!

    A Question About Haddos Delight

I'm very interested in trying this blend, but would like to know whether red Virginia is a dominant ingredient. I've found that too much red Virginia can be a real irritant for me, at least in some RV-dominant blends (Rattray's more famous blends are tolerable for me, as is H&H Anniversary Kake...

    Klondike Gold Flake

I think we are calling too much attention to this flake. Some good thing should be kept secret!

    Klondike Gold Flake

Evo, I let the flake dry for 15 minutes or so. Last night I did the fold & stuff thing, and Harris was right. Subtle sweetness throughout the smoke. I'm ordering more!

    Klondike Gold Flake

I've found a good pipe for this and similar flakes. I have a couple of Savinelli billiards, group 4, that really work well. I've also been able to smoke more of this tobacco by rubbing it out. The flavor really comes through during the last 3rd of the bowl--creamy and slightly sweet. It's a...

    New Releases From Samuel Gawith

Anyone know what sort of Virginias are used in the Springtime or Summer blends?

    Klondike Gold Flake

Harris, you've often noted that you pack your pipe pretty tightly. I'm wondering just how tight you think a flake should be packed. The standard instruction is to pack until the resistance is similar to drinking through a straw. Are your pipes packed tighter than this?

    Klondike Gold Flake

    Sorry for the double post!

    Klondike Gold Flake

I am on my fourth bowl of this flake. It is very nice. I am still trying to perfect my flake smoking technique. I've experienced a little bite, but the flavor really starts to come through after about the first 1/5 or so of the bowl. Thanks all for the recommendation!

    Goodbye, Red Virginia

Harris, The strange thing is that I'm fine with both Old Gowrie and HOTW. I'm wondering if the manner of processing and the presence of perique make a difference here. But like you, PS and McClellend both murder my tongue. And yes, I've consulted your list of flakes, and they've been helpful...

    Goodbye, Red Virginia

Yep. I will get some MF soon. I just ran out of Anni Kake and needed to restock immediately. For me, AK *can* bite in a strange way if puffed hard. But the perique and complex array of non-red Virginias result in a much more enjoyable smoke.

    Goodbye, Red Virginia

Well, mostly anyway. I've come back to reds again and again. They taste great, but smoking them invariably results in a cracked, sore tongue. I admit I may have some bad smoking habits, but my recent experiments have me convinced that--with some exceptions--anything that is predominantly red...

    Klondike Gold Flake

Lol. Ok, Peck. You two can share the honor. Now who gets the blame if I hate this tobacco?

    Klondike Gold Flake

I just ordered a few tins of KG, and I'm excited to try it (hat tip to Harris).I will never be in a position to order my favorite tobacco in large quantities (three kids on on a college professor's salary!), so be kind and leave a few tins for me.

Flavor Profile of Capstan Gold vs. Blue?

SP *just* ran out of Klondike Gold. @#$*&$#!!!

Do You Change Tobaccos with the Change of Seasons?

Not me. I smoke my Virginias year round, although I do go through phases when I prefer burleys, but those phases are unrelated to seasonal changes.

Flavor Profile of Capstan Gold vs. Blue?

Thanks, Harris. I'm more inclined to purchase more Blue based on your description, as well as Brigham Klondike Gold. I'll also be grabbing some Fribourg & Treyer Special Brown on my next purchase.
