Bradley, you need to thank me for turning Chris on to the gold and then thank Peck for turning me onto it.
Yeah, I could not believe those guys thought I made your morta, that was too funny.

Hmm...looks like I'll have to add a half dozen tins of this stuff to next month's order.

Harris, you've often noted that you pack your pipe pretty tightly. I'm wondering just how tight you think a flake should be packed. The standard instruction is to pack until the resistance is similar to drinking through a straw. Are your pipes packed tighter than this?

I've found a good pipe for this and similar flakes. I have a couple of Savinelli billiards, group 4, that really work well. I've also been able to smoke more of this tobacco by rubbing it out. The flavor really comes through during the last 3rd of the bowl--creamy and slightly sweet. It's a shade darker than I expected, which is a good thing.

future, sorry I did not see your earlier post. The sipping through the straw reference is not as tight as I pack mine, definitely tighter. If it expands more than I think it will, I run a pipe cleaner through the stem which in most cases loosens it up just fine. It does take some practice to get it right, but once you do I think you will find you get a cooler more flavorful smoke. I do not rub out my flakes because in my experience they burn hotter and lose flavor. You should also try a fold and stuff with the Gold, I use that method when I am smoking outside and it also works great. The only issue with the fold and stuff I encounter is sometimes I have to tend to the bowl more than if I cube cut it. The Gold is a nice soft flake so even with a fold and stuff it generally burns nicely. When I say it is a softer flake, if you compare it to Mac Baren Old Dark Fired or Peterson University flake you will see what I mean as those are a thicker more sturdier flake.

Can't wait to crack this tin. From what I've heard smokeable off the bat. Can't wait to see what she tastes like with age.

Are you guys letting this flake dry out at a bit? I opened a tin the other day and the flakes seemed a little moist to smoke right away.

Dang it!!! Why didn't I see this post when I did my big order earlier this week. I am going to have to give this a try. But its going to need to wait now that Christmas is coming up and the wife has cut off my tobacco purchases so we can get presents. Oh well, I did sneak in 2 lbs of ODF in my order :P

Evo, I do not let this flake dry out at all before smoking. I find it to be perfect right out of the tin as a little moist is fine. If you let a flake get too dry, it will lose flavor because it burns too hot. Out of the 28 flakes in my cellar, probably two thirds of them are ready to smoke out of the tin.
mrjerke, the Gold has already been aged 2-3 years in the tin before we get it which is why it tastes so good right off the bat. I think in another 4-5 years it will be sublime.
bigboi, bummer you didn't see this thread, but grabbing 2 lbs of ODF is a great score.

future, lol I totally hear you but if we did that to all the great flakes out there, then none of us would have been able to find them. It is a double edged sword talking about our favorite blends because in many cases once we begin, they become hard to find. Before I began talking about Wessex Brigade Campaign about a year ago, it was never hard to get, now it is a bitch. When I first came to the site, people were talking about blends that I had never tried and I ended up getting some of my favorites because of those posts, so I feel that I am also obligated to let people know when I find a blend I like. Yes it makes getting them difficult at times, but we are here to help each other so I still talk about my favorites.
Back to the subject of the Gold, I have been folding and stuffing this one the last few bowls and I am enjoying it a tad more than when I cube cut it. I think I may try more fold and stuffs with my softer flakes like Capstan Blue, F&T CVP, Dunhill Flake, Rotary Navy Cut and a few more.

I think we are calling too much attention to this flake. Some good thing should be kept secret!
Yes, the mistake I made was telling Harris how good it was. The man couldn't keep a secret to save his soul.

peck, you are so full of excrement, as you are the one who started this thread after making me promise not to let the word out. I did acquiesce to your wishes hoping you would do the right thing and tell our fellow brothers how good this stuff was. I was very pleased when I saw this thread as you did the community a solid by letting everyone know how tasty this blend is.
Brigham should be giving you royalties on every tin that has been sold since the start of this thread as I believe that number is significant. If you need any help negotiating a number let me know, I know a good corporate attorney who is adept at these types of negotiations.

Harris,
I think your memory is addled by way too much cheap Champagne. I started this thread because, after I accidentally told you about this flake, I was worried that you would be like a hog in a trough and there would be no KG for the rest of us. And so, realizing the ramifications of my colossal blunder, I started this thread - to protect my fellow brothers of the leaf from the avarice and rapacity that you display so frequently in your daily existence.
