    The Most Disappointing Tobacco

Yesterdays smoke du jour was some 5 year old Marlin. It was merely ok, but the evening pipe of DTM St Bernard really was a Nirvana smoke. It brought me everything that I wanted from Marlin, but never quite got.

    Favorite Dan Tobacco blends

I'm certainly not happy when blends change for no reason. The last Solani 633 I bought in 50gm tins had definitely changed, and not for the better. So far I have been delighted with Dan tobacco products and I'm awaiting some Salty Dogs and Limerick flake. I will certainly buy more St Bernard...

    The Most Disappointing Tobacco

What have been the most over-hyped blends that you have encountered in your pipe smoking career ?Marlin Flake is one such for me. It smells lovely and smokes reasonably well but I never seem to achieve the blissful Nirvana smokes that others get. I find it lacklustre and bitey. I really want to...

    Kriswill Navy cut Flake

Thanks for the reply. I am a little at a loss for a direct comparison with similar blends. Perhaps Escudo or DNR ? There is a strong yeasty breadiness that pervades. I like it very much.

    Kriswill Navy cut Flake

This is the second blend that I recently bought in bulk from Estervals, the other being also a VaPer from Dan Tobacco in the form of St Bernard Flake. There is quite a contrast between the two with this blend being more Virginia forward and the Perique being used as more of a condiment. The...

Brief GH Brown Flake Unscented Review

Thanks for the review. I used to buy this blend and add about 7ml of good scotch whiskey per 50gms. It was as close as I could get to the late lamented Players Whiskey flake. It was a decent smoke after a period of mellowing in the jar.

    Dan Tobacco St Bernard Flake

Thanks very much. I will also review Kriswill Blue when I have smoked enough to form a cogent opinion. It is also a charming smoke and a completely different animal although technically a VaPer too.

    Dan Tobacco St Bernard Flake

So what attracts you to buying a tobacco that you've never tried before ? In my case I look for a flavour profile that I know works for me. A VaPer usualy floats my boat more than other genres so that's a good place to start presumably. I have been disappointed in the past however, but this time...

    Favorite Dan Tobacco blends

St Bernard is one of the best blends I have tried in tha VaPer genre. I have only tried 2 bowls so far, but I agree with you. Its like DNR but on steroids.

Anyone tried Kriswill Navy Cut ?

    Favorite Dan Tobacco blends

That's what I was being drawn to, like a moth to the flame ! Curse you, attractive tin art !! The Kriswill Blue was a stellar smoke tonight btw, and no doubt I will be equally impressed with the St Bernard flake tomorrow......

    Favorite Dan Tobacco blends

Thanks so much. That's a great list to be getting on with. I am also tempted to try Salty Dogs as I am a sucker for a good plug.

    Favorite Dan Tobacco blends

Thanks for the reply. I am unable to tolerate Burley so I tend to avoid it. Hence the liking for VaPers.

    Favorite Dan Tobacco blends

So finally I gave in and ordered a couple of "new to me" blends from Estervals Pipe House. They have a massive sale on and suddenly it makes sense to order in bulk. Kriswill Navy cut Blue and St Bernard have been my choices, both in 250gm mylar pouches. The burning question is, what else from...

    Availability In UK Tobacco Market.

N Nothing wrong with Gawith Hoggarth. I'm not a huge fan of Lakelands per se, but I recently bought some Pigtail Twist and curly cut Deluxe and found both excellent. I also very much enjoy RB plug from their sister company.

    Availability In UK Tobacco Market.

Thanks for the advice, although there are very few MacBaren products getting through at all. Just the Codger blends like St Bruno.

    Availability In UK Tobacco Market.

Hi there. That's a matter of conjecture. The market is very limited in some respects. VaPer blends in particular are in short supply. I want to try Old Gowrie and Hal of the Wind but nowhere to be found. I also want to try MacBaren Vanilla Flake but its "up and gone like a fart in the breeze"...

    Availability In UK Tobacco Market.

So it would seem, we UK pipe smokers are getting the thin end of the wedge after leaving the European market. Kohlhasse and Kopp products are scarce as Unicorn poo which includes Robert McConnell, Rattrays, Solani and a few others. MacBaren have very few products still available, (codger blends)...

    Players Whisky (Blenders Highland)

Players Whisky ready rubbed was a particular favorite blend of mine when I first tried a pipe 45 years ago. Back then it was also available as flake. Does anyone smoke this regularly ? It is made by MacBaren these days and due to the rediculous tobacco naming laws, it has been renamed as...

    Borkum Riff Bronze (Bourbon).

Thanks for that. Sadly unobtanium in the UK. I also believe that body chemistry has a lot to do with tongue bite when smoking a certain blend. I have a hard time with Burley.
