    Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

It's one of the great survival stories of all time. Shackleton was the epitome of leadership. Incredible that she's still down there...

    Got Milk? Apparently Not

I'm not sure why you see this as being a mercenary? Now, if he'd said "we'll *conclude* whatever you want if you're paying," that would be a different story. But just researching an issue... sounds like he was just doing his job? The other outlying cases mentioned basically make my point that...

    Got Milk? Apparently Not

Well... in a way it kind of does. There IS value in a definitive consensus. This is because of the way academia works: there is literally no better way to get ahead in your field, securing that coveted tenured position, lucrative lecturing engagements, access to research grants etc., than by...

    Buying tobacco

My thoughts: legal? Yes. Sleazy? Yes. There's probably more ethical - and rewarding - ways to earn a buck than by trying to create a perceived shortage for a good and then gouging people for it. But no shortage of this kind of laziness in the world, this is just another example.

    Question about 4noggins

Used them quite a bit. I've never tried to really *communicate* with them, but from my perspective the relationship works great: I pay them a fair price and my goods show up in a fair timeframe. Works for me.

    Looking For English Blend Alternatives

965, Proper English and Old Dublin are pretty oriental-forward. Based on that: LJ Peretti Royal, Tashkent, Oriental 40 and Cambridge Flake. Hearth & Home White Knight and Magnum Opus. All the Pease blends that have already been mentioned. Personally, I'm now a complete LJ Peretti fanboy...

New Guy with a New Nording

Thanks all! Chasing Embers, that's a great freehand. You're exactly right, this one also feels like it was carved specifically for the hand. Mso, I agree about the weight of the Nordings. These two are probably the lightest pipes I own, even though they are larger than most of the others...

    Negatives or Hazards of Retrohaling?

Thanks guys. It sounds like what I was guessing, that there's not a specific additional risk but just additional exposure. That's certainly a consideration, but at least I wasn't blissfully unaware of a whole separate risk (actually, that doesn't sound like the worst state...) I fall in the...

    Negatives or Hazards of Retrohaling?

Hello, Title says it all, I think. "Retrohaling" is something I've just kind of done instinctively for quite a while, though I never would have guessed it actually had a name. I just learned that recently. I've also, in a few posts discussing it, read cautions not to do it too frequently...

New Guy with a New Nording

Hello all, I've been an on-again / off-again pipe smoker for over 20 years. Lately it's been "on" enough that I figured it was time to become more than a lurker, if only so I can ask the occasional question. ;-) I favor lat/oriental blends and am looking forward to branching out a bit...
