Favored Techniques for Pocket Knife Sharpening?

We've got 25+years from USA made Chicago Cutlery kitchen knives plus a Wusthof and a brace of Lamsons that replaced some of the Chicagos from our set that sadly wonder off, never to return. For the camp kitchen I have a couple of Green River knives that are easy to sharpen and hold an edge for...

How Far down the Bowl do You Go?

I stop puffing when it stops being tasty. If a pipe smokes like a champ first time out, no breaking in is required. Cake needs to evenly coat the bowl, You don't want thick cake. So load a third of a bowl and smoke it all the way down the first few times That should adequately coat the bottom...

    Smoking a new pipe

It's not necessary, but some might find it fun. I find it fun (sometimes) but I'm easily amused.

    Smoking a new pipe

I'm curious. How do you get raw sugar to stick to the sides of the bowl?

    Smoking a new pipe

I wouldn't try smoking my car's exhaust pipe either LOL!

    Smoking a new pipe

A thin schmear of honey or jelly in the bowl won't hurt. It probably won't help much either. I like fiddling around with my pipes so I'll often start a new pipe with a little (very little) honey. But often not. Some pipes are fine right out the gate, others need to be broken in to smoke well...

    Getting deeper into smoking

Stokkebye makes some of my favorite bulk blends. Very high quality and economical in bulk. After 50 years of piping I can't recollect ever spending $99 or more on a briar, and that includes some nice Savinellis and Petersons. Most of the early horses in my stable were $15-25 (1970 dollars)...

    Emergency!

Not the TV show featuring Julie London as the nurse at Ramparts Hospital. Emergency groceries. During the drought, the State of California recommended keeping four days of emergency drinking water per family member. I did that. My daughter who likes to bake introduced me to the notion of always...

    Empty Nest Starts Now.

When family life is replaced with cardiac rehab sessions is when things start getting interesting again. It's a good thing the kids aren't here to see what's become of their old dad.

    Backyard Projects

Mission accomplished. Some cold watermelon was my reward.

    Backyard Projects

My side yard is a mess. There is a 16' Grumman aluminum canoe resting on two I-beam saw horses I built from 2x4s and 20d nails straddling a Model T rear axle with a support propping up the backyard fence thrown in for good measure, all overgrown with weeds (fire hazard!) I've already cleared...

    Pipe Rotation

The closest I've been to a rotation was an enchantment with plucky little Peterson 303s. My previous briars were all of a more ample size and I needed to scale down when my state's tobacco taxes became obscene. Smaller bowl=less tobacco burned. Is there a better excuse to buy more pipes? I...

    Beyond Van Gogh

It's hard to describe. There are these huge screens, the entire walls, ceilings and floors of an exhibit hall with projected images that change themes, Some start out as sketches and then painted. Small details move (birds in flight, a portrait blinks, waves lap the waterfront) Amazing stuff!

    Beyond Van Gogh

came to my town----a digital immersive experience. Tickets were courtesy of my F-I-L I didn't know what to expect but it was a very enjoyable time---how to describe it? I can't! But I'd highly recommend it if it ever shows up in your neck of the woods, Lots to take in, if you've got a creative...

    Pipe Shapes/Styles I "Should" Try/Experience

I find my pipes leaning towards pots, bulldogs and apples, both straights and bents. The smoking qualities are identical but how they fit in my hand is what attracts me.

    Favorite Steak Marinade

For me, in this economy, the notion of having steak is like some kind of cruel joke.

How Do You Know When Summer Has Arrived?

It was a sad day when push reel mowers faded into History. That was a delightful lawn mowing sound especially at the end of a run when the reel free spooled until stopping, Also the smell of cut grass wasn't competing with the stink of exhaust from the Briggs & Stratton
