Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

The amount of blends that are worth smoking to the literal bitter end I could probably count on one hand. That's not to say you can't do it but personally I don't think it's worth it. Even coming at it from a rotation/drying perspective I don't see the point unless you're a pipe smoking...

    Happy Pi Day Everyone

Happy pi day. Anyone have any pie themed smokes to suggest for the occasion?

    Peterson Saddle Stems

I've become a big fan of Peterson. The first nice pipe I bought myself was a 107 Ebony spigot for Christmas which has become a tradition. What drew me to this pipe aside from the contrast of the ebony stain and the glimmering silver accents was the saddle stem. I just really love saddle...

    Rubbing Out Flakes.

Folding flakes is blasphemy, it disrupts the artisanal grain of the tobacco. True pipe smoking gourmands line up unbroken strips in a 3 inch deep bowl and then spend the next week smoking it. Just as with plugs and the necessity of a square bowl to smoke the unadulterated plug from top to bottom.

    Why do Pipes Taste Different?

I think Cosmic nailed it. There are so many factors that go into it, where my heads at, what I ate for breakfast, where I'm smoking, what the weather's like, that go beyond just bowl and stem dimensions. Aside from avoiding smoking Christmas Cheer in your sacrificial Devil's Holiday pipe I...

    Pipe Sighting at the Movies

I can't really blame the actor. It's not exactly something you can just pick up. I imagine there aren't many actors that are going to dedicate themselves to learning pipe smoking just to appease a bunch of grumblers on the internet. I know Michael Gladis on Mad Men is actually a pipe smoker and...

Did You Lose Your Taste for Aromatics Over Time?

It's always seemed the opposite to me. I really hate that newbs get recommended aromatics because they're hands down the hardest to smoke. You get told to smoke not only the most technique demanding variety but usually the bottom of the barrel of that variety (cheap vanilla or cherry aros)...

    Happy Piper in Alaska

Welcome from NC. I'm always curious how pipe smoking is for people in other countries or remote areas. So how is pipe smoking in Alaska? I assume the shipping can be expensive but is it difficult to obtain any blends that wouldn't be for somebody in the contiguous 48?

    Elizabethan Mixture

I'm the same actually. It's just as Lat'y as any other English to me but a lot of people seem to think otherwise so I assume I'm just especially sensitive to it.

    What is a "Stinger" for?

Frankly if you're getting so much steam along with the smoke that a stinger would help then you're doing something wrong. Besides a 6mm balsa filter will do the same thing better.

    Another Meer Coloring Tip/Method

I'm in a similar boat. I love the really old deep red meers that presumably somebody smoked as their only pipe for 50 years straight. How many folks these days are one pipe guys? I'd imagine very few, feels like we've all got way too many to get that kind of rich coloring.

Your Experience with Bit Grips/Softy Bits?

They're a god send for clenching heavier pipes. That said I don't like them if I'm holding the pipe up to my mouth, just kind of unpleasant thing to wrap your lips around. So for heavier pipes I'll push them about 3/4 of inch up the stem so I can still clench on to it if need be but it's...
  13. Swiss Army Knife

    Elizabethan Mixture

Yeah I'd second this. Especially if you wanted more perique. I've got a jar of Match Vic that I pop and it borderline smells like fish food it's so periquey. Otherwise Elizabethan has always been a very light VaPer, good as an intro the blend type or if you're sensitive to perique. Similar to...

What is Your Favorite Blend in the Morning?

Mocha Strips is a morning go to, Bayou Morning if I want a bit of a kick. This morning I cooked some really good NC sausage patties so I felt like smoking some Watch City Glass Slipper afterwards.

    Pipe Tampers

These are awesome cosmic but do they stab you in the hand if you reach for one in a pocket?

Cellar Labels (community labels part) is down.

Yeah for sure, link to the thread is here: Swiss Army Knife's Jar Labels :: Pipes Accessories - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/swiss-army-knifes-jar-labels.91246/ It's a mix of my own designs and remaking older designs by hand in illustrator so they're pristine vectors.

Up with What are You Lighting ?

Usually this Peterson old boy knock off. I also use a weird setup of an electric arc lighter zippo insert and beeswax hemp wick. Mainly because I wanted something with a super soft flame that was really controllable that I could refill for really cheap. Electricity and wick is about as cheap...

    One Light Pipe

Drying a bit helps a lot but usually new smokers complaining about relights is because they're either packing too tight or their relight method is a pain. So check the draw when you pack and get something that doesn't suck to relight with. I always tell newbs to stay away from matches for that...

Strong Blends, Gentle on the Throat and Sinuses?

Sounds like your big problem is retrohaling too much. Both can really irritate your throat and sinuses if done excessively especially with blends with spicy condiments like ODF with it's DFK and Haunted with it's bit of perique. Nightcap's healthy dose of Latakia likely makes it a lot smoother...

What a find!! - 1942 Dunhill Sliced Rolls Sealed Tin

I've had similar luck and from experience I'd recommend either selling it and making hay while make it you may or popping it now and enjoying it. Tobacco has an incredibly long shelf life but it's not eternal. Blends start to go downhill around the 40 year mark if not earlier. So this tin being...
