Breaking in a Cob.
As others stated, no break in necessary. I personally don't like the cobs until they develop a cake as they have a strong taste they impart to the tobacco when new.- Doctor Chopper

I recommend sticking to your ribbon cuts until you get experience and comfortable with packing and smoking the pipe. Perhaps you are already there.
