I can't comprehend what happened at a Las Vegas concert last night. My stepdaughter, her friend, her daughter and her friend were all there for the 3 day event. They literally dodged a bullet because one of them got sick and they left just before the shooting started. But because of the chaos they couldn't get to their car, and had to take a taxi to the hotel. I'm so thankful that they are alright and my heart goes out to those who lost family or friends, and to those injured. The numbers are staggering!

What a sad day. I don't know what makes people want to do these kinds of things.

Orley I'm glad to hear your family is ok.

Orley, I'm so glad that your stepdaughter and her child escaped unharmed, but saddened that they had to witness this unfathomably evil event.

Listening to the audio, and it sounds like that guy had a bump-stock at the very least. ISIS is claiming some sort of responsibility for, or connection to this guy, but right now there is very little info concerning what really happened.

There is zero evidence that this dude is Muslim or that he converted. ISIS would like credit for all killings.

Old fellas in their sixties seem to be the new peril, after the shooting of the Congressman at softball practice, and now this. Doesn't sound like jihad at this point, more like depression, a bad bad personal life, health problems and low blood sugar, and lack of character to the bone. Orely, I'm so glad your stepdaughter and her party literally dodged the bullets. I feel vigilant at church these days, like when some young dude showed up with odd bulky luggage for a memorial service. Some innocent explanation, but who knew?

Big hero commendations for the police who charged the guy at Congressional softball practice. Two handguns against a long gun. Very brave people. Don't mess with those two.

Ahhhh, the pesky facts! Much easier to fit the actions with our preconceived notions. Yes! Wait for some facts. It may take days. Perhaps weeks.

We may never know why exactly. They say that he moved out there because he liked to gamble. That is a big red flag to me right there. I absolutely stay away from people like that.

Wow it's a small world, I just found out my cousin Eric was at the Bellagio during this and is still on lock-down in the hotel waiting for further instructions from law officials.
These things hit close to home for a lot of us, my thoughts are with the families of the victims.

The spin of supposition only makes the tragedy worse. It does nothing to comfort the survivors and obfuscates our understanding of the "why". At best, it is a diversion when we need to focus.

My analysis is similar. Typical murder-suicides, no matter what reasons they claim for it. Shades of Elliot Rodger, Klebold and Harris, Cho, and Hodgkinson but not Wiese or Auvinen.

Tim, that is simply awful. My prayers for your, your friends and their families.

We have a close family friend who works in music festival production. My older son has worked several events with him (Bonaroo, Pemberton, Hang Out and the like). Our friend had other work and so was not at Route 91, for which we are grateful.

Sorry for your loss Ash. Thoughts go out to you and your friends.

4 of my friends were there, and they survived. Not sure how as they posted on FB that they were okay, but people they were standing next to were shot. They had bullets flying over their head, and ran for cover when there were breaks in the gun fire. One of them is an EMT/Paramedic and was helping people as much as he could as they were trying to get out. Very scary, very sad.

Sorry to hear that, ashdigger. Sounds like this guy planned ahead to be there for a gathering, for whatever reason. I am hearing that he had around 15 guns and a lot of ammo up in his room, and locals are saying that he probably would not have been able to walk in and just get a room yesterday. I am hearing that somehow he got the room a few days ago through his live-in girlfriend, but so far, no one knew that he was planning to do anything. Everyone down there could have been armed and educated and it would not have helped, because hopefully no one would have shot back towards a huge hotel across the street. To me it looks like he was somewhat far away, 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile maybe. Very sad day.

Just like to add that I'm sure I speak for all Brit forum members...a very sad and tragic set of events and those who have suffered have our thoughts and sympathies.

In the aftermath there will be many serious questions that will need some answers, answers that some may find difficult to give.

    All so very sad.

I'm very sorry for those affected by this senseless act. Like everyone else, I'm looking for some kind of answer as to how and why this could happened. The fact that the FBI is investigating leads me to think they are tracing the tripod mounted machine gun a witness saw in the window of the hotel. I'm thinking that there was some other criminal element involved. He wouldn't have been able to get that weapon any other way. He obviously didn't go through the ATF.

For now, we'll just have to wait until the FBI makes a statement... and mourn.

    That is horrible Tim.

We have two neighbors who went to Vegas on Friday. Their daughter didn't hear anything from them on Monday AM and called them. They were still sleeping and knew nothing of the incident.

Our newspaper reports that a local woman (Maryland) was among those killed, just awful.

It is entirely possible that had a legal full auto weapon. But we don't know yet. Supposition at this point is not terribly useful, IMHO. Debating whether a weapon used in a mass killing is legal or not smacks of circling the 2A wagons while people are still dying and mourning.

Well, this is not the moment for politics.Or maybe the better moment is when these things happen, unless people forget and don't meditate on anymore.
I don't want to judge anybody cause perhaps this is simply the sad price a nation accept for a choice.
Japan experienced atomic bomb, but accepted the risks of nuclear energy in order to reach industrial development and majority of Japaneses didn't quibble after Fukushima.

    Hmm.

Thing is, some of us work in this space, so these events always spark discussions of TT&P. Certainly no disrespect is meant -- indeed, quite the opposite, as the goal is to understand and analyze, precisely because these matters are so grave.

I saw no injection of any politics, and I very surely meant none. But moderators gonna moderate and no complaint from me if they do.

Does anyone else see the reason for these mass shootings is the trend follower mentality of our society

What keeps coming back to me is all of the years of life lost by so many, and lives changed, both by the injured and by the survivors of those lost and the caretakers of those injured. It is such an affront and insult to life and to us all, even if we skip the diatribe about the cowardice and evil of these acts (and it wasn't just one, it was a long continuum). Cruelty and meaninglessness. It wears the spirit.

A terrible event, prayers for all the lost, the injured, their families, friends and the first responders.
