I use 9mm charcoal and balsa filters on the majority of my pipes. 3 of my calabashes don't take filters but they're a different kettle of fish. If i'm smoking briar then it's mostly 9mm.

I'm using 9mm filters with my pipe and looking at them after just two smokes I feel like everyone should :)

But if you had a double long shank that allowed two filters in a row, the second filter would be discolored, too. Clearly you haven't yet achieved the goal of nothing at all coming out of the pipe stem.

The point was the more you see on your filter, the less you'll have in your lungs. But also I subscribe to the opinion that none of that matters. I don't advocate for anything, just trying to have a conversation and hopefully a laugh ;)
