I have 2 Rossi's, 1 Savinelli, 1 Grabow, and 2 MM cobs that take filters. I started using filters and then quit after I smoked one pipe without a filter.
Does Everyone Use Pipe Filters?

I switched from regular pipes to 6mm filter pipes then added 9mm filter pipes. I prefer the filter pipes but haven't culled any excess non-filter pipes ... yet. There are advantages to both.
I use 6mm and 9mm charcoal filters. I prefer them. I have pipes that don’t take filters also. I bought these before trying filtered pipes. I will use them occasionally, but they are not my preference. To each his own.
I tried them a few times years ago. Found them to be a pain and found no pluses to their use. I tend to smoke dry and do not exhale moist breath or, deposit spit into my pipes.
I use 9mm charcoal and balsa filters on the majority of my pipes. 3 of my calabashes don't take filters but they're a different kettle of fish. If i'm smoking briar then it's mostly 9mm.

But if you had a double long shank that allowed two filters in a row, the second filter would be discolored, too. Clearly you haven't yet achieved the goal of nothing at all coming out of the pipe stem.
I have used the balsa filters a few times. Both the 6 and 9mm didn’t think much of them.
The point was the more you see on your filter, the less you'll have in your lungs. But also I subscribe to the opinion that none of that matters. I don't advocate for anything, just trying to have a conversation and hopefully a laugh
If not directly inhaling, there's negligible concern for that.
